Creating decals on clothing items?

I am interested in adding an embroidered girl's first name to the sleeve of her college jacket (the one created by AJC I bought from the Shop some months ago), but I realize the only way I could do this is through decal node.

However, I prefer to only use a select area of the sleeve (just enough space to fit in the embroidered name which I created using a font I downloaded this evening).

How can I accomplish this?  And would I be able to add PNG graphics to the decal surface I will have created?

    Yes and No:

Yes you can add Decals on any part of the cloth and is very flexible (because you can scale, rotate and position it in real time) than add a name pasted directly on the cloth texture but...

No, transparent PNG does not work anymore, you need to make an Opacity map with your PNG and apply on the same time but on the Opacity Channel of iRay Uber Shader.

  • I can manage to create Opacity channels no problem.  I've dealt with such task when it comes to Dreamland's city blocks.

Now, I'd like to know, what steps would I have to take in order to create decals on a clothing item?

    1. Select your cloth, not your figure using that cloth.
    2. Create iRay Decal Node
    3. if you did step 1 your decal node will be parented on your cloth
    4. select decal node
    5. go to Surface tab
    6. apply your image
    7. apply your opacity map on Opacity Channel. remember, white is visible, black is not visible
    8. select your decal node as desired on your cloth
    9. move your decal node, looks like a Null Cube and should be scaled or moved until the image is completely visible.

  • I successfully added the first name to the sleeve. But I wanted to render it in 3Delight afterwards after resetting to texture shaded. What would I have to do in order to display in 3Delight? Is there a 3Delight equivalent to iRay decal node?

  • I figured out my problem. It turns out that iRay decal nodes were not the solution.  I need to add a small patch to a certain section of the jacket.

Are there any tutorials on how to create small patches to a certain section of a jacket or any object?
