This month’s theme is inspired by classic pulp magazine cover art of the 1920s-50s. Check it out and join the fun! (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/).
The Carrara monthly challenge is open to all Carrara users – beginner, intermediate, and veteran. It is designed to help users learn about the many tools and features Carrara has to offer in a fun and friendly environment. The WIP thread is a great place for non-users to learn more about Carrara, for users to pick up tips and tricks, and for all to catch a glimpse of fellow 3D artists in action. The ultimate goal of the challenge is to generate some great renders, which are voted on by the DAZ 3D community. Winners of the Carrara monthly challenge receive prizes generously provided by the challenge sponsors.
The sponsors for the October Carrara challenge are DAZ 3D and The AntFarm!
Keep watching this thread for updates from the October Carrara Challenge WIP thread!!!

Hello Dudes & Dudettes
Just a fun one to get everyone a bit more interested !!!!!!
Great theme, SukyL. I think I saw a thread asking if there were any Halloween-related contests sponsored in the Daz forums. Someone could definitely take inspiration from the attached old pulp covers for a Halloween type entry in October Carrara challenge.
Of course, I shouldn't imply that the theme is Halloween. Any pulp genre would do (which is just about everything). Westerns, Romance, Western Romance, just about anything.
Bunyip02 That's an awesome and inspiring render! Well done!
diomede64 Thanks for adding more pulp cover examples! Those are Fantastic and Amazing specimens! See what I did there? ;-)
diomede64 is exactly right. This challenge would be an excellent one for anyone wanting to work on spooky Halloween inspired covers. Horror pulps and comics where very popular back in the 20s-50s. Think Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Weird Tales!
And, if you're not into horror, there is such a huge number of other pulp genres. There is truly something for everyone in this challenge! Still not sold? Make up your own pulp genre!
Ladies and Gentlemen, I was not exaggerating when I said the Carrara monthly challenge WIP thread is a great place to learn about Carrara and get tips and tricks. The WIP is only on page 4 and already a great source of information.
Feast upon the offerings so far!
Need more inspiration for retro ideas or rust textures, Bunyip02 has posted links to great resources here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/#688302 and here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P15/#688743
Curious about what makes up a Carrara shader in the Texture Room? diomede64 looks under the hood of Carrara's own rusty iron shader for inspiration (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P15/#688718).
Here's a tip from me to you: Pre-existing Carrara content is a great place to start in order to meet the challenge requirements. Significantly altering a pre-existing Carrara shader would count towards fulfilling a created in Carrara requirement.
Don't like to do any postwork, but need text for the cover layout? diomede64 shows how to use the text editor and vertex modeler to get the custom cover text you are after (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/#688317)
diomede64 has added a very informative tutorial on setting up a custom rusty metal shader and creating custom texture maps with Carrara's 3D paint tool (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P30/#688961)
kashyyyk Is really galloping away with the theme. He's already posted a mockup of his cover layout. Wow! It really nails the spirit of the pulps with an exciting perspective and genre mashup (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P45/#689448)
diomede64 shows how to use the magnet deformer tool with Astounding results (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P45/#689502)
Stay tuned! There are hints of potential non-photorealistic and toon render use!
Thanks for looking. Don't forget to check out the October Carrara Challenge: Create a pulp magazine cover with Chills, Thrills, & Carrara Skills! details here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/
Your humble challenge host,
sukyL
Absolutely stunning work by the artists as they compose and design their scenes.
The hostess is also doing an absolutely stunning and brilliant job of hosting this challenge, and encouraging participation! Bravo SukyL!
Oops! :red:
I forgot that I was going to give a teaser on what I'm doing for the challenge.
Thanks so much for the kind words evilproducer:red:.
I love your procedural shader for the bone and use of the 3D paint tool for the teeth.
Wow! I wish everyone could see what you've done with that skull now. Oh, I guess they can if they click right here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P75/#690243
Just checked in with the gang in the WIP thread.
I was right! There is a lot of discussion now about Toon shaders and non-photorealsitc rendering by diomede64, kashyyyk, SileneUK, and bunyip02. I'm getting tempted to try it out myself.

This is just shameless buoying up the thread....
I sure would hate to bump up the thread just to say that I hope to have some stuff this weekend. ;-)
I've got my lines down for the play, but rehearsals are every weeknight. Plus I've been roped into sound design for the production. Ugh!
Oh my! Bumping a thread up like that wouldn't be right at all. ;-) Can't wait to see what you've been working on.
Good luck with the play. By the way is it an evilproduction?
I FINALLY came up with an idea for the challenge, this is what I've got so far - there is more info on it over in the challenge thread.

Still time to get an entry in.. some great works being done once again this month.. awesome pulp!
That is fun!
And not only is there time to get an entry in, there is time to get started on one idea, change your mind, start a different idea, abandon the second, and finish the first. Plus, lots of people would offer free, and perhaps unsolicited :) , help, tips, and advice. This is a wonderful opportunity to delve deep into your content library and use that quirky/freaky set, vehicle, or outfit that you couldn't resist, but had no particular immediate use for.
Stezza and diomede are exactly right. There is plenty of time (11 days) to get working on something for the October Carrara Challenge. We're just a little over half way to the submission deadline -- 10/26!
The WIP thread is up to 19 Astounding pages! Works are in various stages now from early to near completion--cover titles and everything. I want to give a play-by-play update since the last one, but there is just too much there now. You're going to have to take my word for it and run don't walk over there to check it out. There are so many great examples posted now. Definitely a valuable resource for anyone working with or interested in Carrara.

Please stop by the WIP thread to see for yourself. My meager updates fail to do them justice.
You're not kidding SukyL. that WIP thread is moving at warp speed! I think you picked a winner of a theme for the challenge!
I'm going to have to find an idea for a second entry as I can't see the tree for the forest ;-)
I spent all that time making the large alien tree, I need to show it off!
Man! That Wip thread keeps in moving! I think SukyL has a record breaker on her hands. Outstanding SukyL!
Back on Page 27 of the WIP, I break down how I used various render passes to get a hybrid look between a comic book/graphic novel look, and a more photo-real look:

evilproducer Thanks so much for dredging this thread up from the depths! It was settling somewhere on the seafloor near my radioactive robo-guy.
Your demonstration of render passes is fantastic! And your composite is gorgeous!
I also want to mention:
head wax demonstrates how to make a multilayered, peeled away texture effect here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P375/#696773
Antara shares her process for render passes and postwork here: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47148/P390/#697338
There is so much helpful information in the WIP thread.
Reminder! October 18, the submissions thread opens! That's TODAY!!!!
I just want to point out that while this is a Carrara challenge, there are many things being done in Carrara and with postwork in the WIP thread that are software agnostic. So if you have ever wondered about how to do something, or just want to increase your knowledge and understand the tools available to you, then check out this thread! Even if you don't enter the challenge or use Carrara, you can still ask questions. many of our artists use a variety of software.
The locations of functions will be different, and names may be slightly "off," but the principles can be applied no matter what the software (provided it has the functionality). Expand your artistic range and check out the WIP thread!
Ladies and Gentlemen! I am very pleased to announce the October Carrara Challenge: Create a pulp magazine cover with Chills, Thrills, & Carrara Skills! SUBMISSIONS THREAD is open (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/47729/)!!!
SUBMISSIONS accepted until Sunday, October 26, 2014 around 10:00 PM U.S. Mountain Time – Then SUBMISSIONS CLOSE and the thread is TRANSMOGRIFIED into the VOTING THREAD.
