Dear Daz

Could you please make in one of your studio builds a way to keep progress on a render in case something like a power outage or worse a stupid update decides to install itself, and restart the pc, so we don't lose huge multi hour long renders, due to the stupidity of operating systems disregarding the fact we have their damn updates off. Would be a major step up since said operating systems manufacturers ain't gonna do it.

  • Your problem seems to stem from OS updates. People may be able to suggest a better way to overcome this problem if you tell them what platform and OS you presently are on.

  • disconnect your internet before you render enlightened

I think anything less than Enterprise Windows can decide to override your settings if they deem it necessary

it has only happened twice for me, once when there was that big security scare but it can happen

...actually W10  Enterprise LSTB, which is for "mission critical" purposes (like hospital networks or running processes/machinery that cannot be interrupted).  It does not have the forced 6 month feature updates, or for that fact much of the useless "fluff" of the other versions.  The downside, you need to pay for Volume Licensing with a minimum of 5 stations/systems so it's rather expensive.

If you have to be connected to the internet while you're rendering make your internet connection a metered connection and then select the no downloads over metered connections option. I assume you can still do this, I quickly got fed up with all the unwanted updates and changed that right at the beginning when I got a Win 10 machine. Haven't had a forced update in years.

I've used these settings for several years on Win 10 Pro to prevent forced updates, still working (you never know when MS removes a feature).   When it notifies about updates, I just click OK and then close the update window that pops up.

On one computer I went through the registry and changed every single reference to MS addresses to something non existant... No more pestering by them wink

Forced updates are a non-issue with Windows 10, it doesn't "just" restart your PC if you don't want to. So there really is nothing that needs changing here, except maybe your settings:

    • Go to the WIndows 10 settings (cogwheel icon in the start menu) and select the "update & security" section.
    • Open the 'update' tab (it's open by default) and find the option: "Change usage times" (second option in the list, the first is the one which delays updates).
    • Make sure the time listed here covers a block in which you're using your computer, optionally set this to automatic.

With these settings WIndows 10 will never reset itself without your consent, at best it will inform you that it will reboot outside regular usage hours.

The cut-off render itself should still be in your set temporary render folder, as long as you are not trying to start another render.

  • Octane can autosave the render in the iterations increments you set.  Mine was set at every 500 iteration. so each 500 iteration a copy is saved in a temp folder.

I'm sure it's possible for Iray to implement that in future upgrades. Whether nVidia will do it or not, that's a different story.

While we're at it, it would be nice to be able to save an IRAY render and then continue the rendering.
