3090 or 2080ti
Hi, I'm just looking for a simple yes/no answer. The Nvidia 30XX series has been covered in depth in the Commons, but in discussions too complex for me to understand.
Simple question for anyone who has laid out the cash for a 3090: Would you spend that money again if you had the choice?
I have a one-year old 2080ti. It would be nice to have all that extra VRAM in a 3090, just not sure if spending that cash is worth it. Did you notice a significant improvement in rendering times? From what people have said I expect about a 20% improvement in render times, which to me is not noticable. 30 minutes or 24 minutes, it's still too long in either case for someone with ADHD.

i wouldn't buy it... so expensive, and current card is quite good
I suppose it's one of those things where the answer starts with " .. it depends .." ..
I got a 3090 with a new PC and even though it cost what it cost - because my mindset was ".. I'm buying a new PC .. " I was more comfortable absorbing the cost .. I probably wouldn't have bought one as an just a GPU upgrade, if that makes sense!
As for worth it .. Yes, for me .. but it depends, as I say, on what you want and what you're happy with when it comes to rendering times .. I'm fortunate in that I was stepping up from a 980ti and so the jump was huge .. In ideal lighting conditions my 3090 pumps out close to 2000 iterations per minute at 1080 resolution (13:10 ratio) .. the average image I do at that resolution works out at about 1200 iterations per minute .. When I go to 4k, 700 per minute .. But those numbers are dependent on all the variables involved within a scene ..
I'm just wondering based on your experience, if I drop $5k on a new system (Corsair Vengeance i7200), if I am going to see a noticable difference. I'm going to feel like an idiot if I spend that much, plug the thing in, turn it on, and barely see any improvement over my Corsair One 2080ti.
Your decision of course is yours.
I'm kind of similar in that I have the 2080ti in a built machine that I had pre-planned to add a second 2080ti.
I figured when the new ones came out, 2080tis would go down and with NVlink have 22GB VRAM.
Well 3090s have 24GB RAM and 2080tis went up in price so I'm also on the fence.
For me, the determining factor is VRAM. For me, with all the new 4k textures, being able to just render without optimizing is more valuable timewise than 10-20% faster render time.
I'd probably still go 2080ti if I could find one at a reasonable price.
The 24GB RAM of the 3090 is more appealable to me than the cores, but as you say, you can probably only get one by buying a whole new machine.
Well, I can't say as I never had a 2080ti so I couldn't comment on the jump .. looking at the benchmark thread (https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/341041/daz-studio-iray-rendering-hardware-benchmarking/p1) .. the 3090 pumps out 18.668 iterations per second on the test render while the 2080ti (based on the last iray version it was tested on) does 7.475 iterations per seconds ... so you're talkng 2.5 times faster in that scene ..
I have a video on my youtube channel showing the 3090 is, on average, 11 times faster than my old 980ti when rendering the same image on both cards .. so the jump for me was huge ..
Oh I didn't realize you were the Rauko on Youtube. Your channel is awesome, definitely my favorite content creator. I just watched your video about solving poke thru. Thanks for the info!
Ha! I try my best - glad I could be of help!
Nice channel. I'll have to give it a good look this evening. Always noce to find a good tutorial channel.
If the prices drop to reasonable - 3090. HANDS DOWN, the greatest consumer grade gpu ever made. 2 x the render speed of 2080ti and 2x the VRAM. I got mine 2 months ago, if shreds DAZ renders like a maniac.
Looks like now is the worst time in history to buy a GPU. but 3090 is the best because when you notice that you don't have enough of GPU ram you will need an upgrade
Although at this time, I think buying a tesla M40 may be a good temporary option 12GB version is only 120$ on eBay 24GB version is not very available and pretty expensive.
it can be a good plug card to the waist for better times when GPU prices will become reasonable again
