Lighting Mystery...

I have an INTERESTING lighting mystery i'm not sure how to fix...

I"m working with the "The Basement" Set by Fugazi1968, https://www.daz3d.com/the-basement

Specifically my problem is with the Ballast Light Props used to light the scene.

These props seem to have an Lighting Emission Node that is not effected by ANY control I can find - and I've spent a considerable amount of time looking at this point.

My goal is simply to have a light that is not "ON" - not emitting any light, but I want the prop to still be visable in the scene. Light blubs don't simply disapear when they're off. =P

The issue seems to be that no matter WHAT variables I set to the "Bulb" texture node. One of the two bulbs is completely unaffected - I've looked for a second Bulb node but can't seem to find one. When I use the Surface Seletion tool DAZ Studio seems to indicate that both bulbs would be affected but they are not. (See the attached picture)

Even MORE Bizzare - not even completely hiding the prop makes the light go away. I know that it's possible to make a "Ghost Light" by taking an emissive object and dialing the opacity WAY down, but usually turning the prop visibility completely off makes the light disappear - not so here.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

Change the Emission Color to black.

  • I tried that before - no dice.

Just FYI though I did it again to illustrate - see the image.

I don't think it's an Emission Settings problem as the front bulb seems to turn on and off just fine. That back bulb seems to have it's own separate Surface Node that is not displayed anywhere that I can find it.

I'm still welcome to suggestions from you people who are much more knowledgable than me. =)

  • I don't have that prodcut, so I can't confirm, but I suspect that the PA (Fugazi) have created both bulbs in one single material zone in which case when you change the shader settings, both bulbs are affected.

You will need to use the geometry editor to create separate matzone for each bulb. It's a bit daunting but here's a video on youtube to get you started:

  • While using the Surface Selection tool - both bulbs are highlighted, leading me to believe that both bulbs SHOULD be controlled by the one Material Zone as you said. As the pics show however - this isn't what's happening.

I haven't found a setting or material node anywhere that enables me to control that back bulb... short of deleting the entire prop that is. Heh.

I'm begining to increasingly suspect that is a bug in the construction of the model.

I will definately check out the video sent though, thanks!

  • I have Basement so I decided to take a look.  The light has a separate tube lighting the other bulb.  When I turn that and the original to black (not dark grey) the lights are off.  Hope this helps!

AHA! So the mistake was mine (I always suspected it was) I thought the lights were a solid prop with no sub-objects... plus I was slightly misled by having a "Bulb" material node in the parent object - I wasn't even looking for the sub object!

That's also the reason the parent object could be hidden without the emissive light going away! Very clever!

Yep, changed both emissive nodes to Black and the light is now fully off! Bravo!

Thanks so much for your help guys! =D

No worries!  I'm glad it helped you out.
