G8.1 and Zeddicuss expressions

blazblaz Posts: 261

Hey,

I bought a bunch of Zeddicuss expression sets because Genesis 8.1 is listed as a compatible figure. I thought the PA updated some of their older sets.

The first two sets I tried don't work with G8.1.

Is there something wrong on my end? Should they be working? Or are they mislabeled?

Oof. There's a workaround you can use to get G8 expressions working with G8.1, but it involves making some files in your data folder invisible (by moving them to a zip file) so that Daz can't read them. But if they are listed as compatible with G8.1, they should work with G8.1 out of the box. I would put in a ticket to see if these are mislabeled.

Yes the expressions are listed as 8.1 compatible at the top of the page but I think that's just a standard figure/software compatibility blurb. Needs to be changed as it's misleading.

You're better off checking the name of the item.  Expressions and textures are the big things that got changed with G8.1, and stuff in those categories not specifically made for G8.1, as shown in the product name, may need a bit of tweaking.

Damn it, I knew they were older products but I thought they got updated to work with 8.1.

I know about the folder workaround but I was hoping to avoid it since my expression library is not that big.

The textures aren't really a problem since DAZ did a great job. And we have Map Transfer...

    Thanks for all the answers.

I don't understand why the size of your expression library makes you want to avoid the workaround/fix...

Making the G8 base expressions (and any expressions that are using them) work on G8.1 requires removing dummy/placeholder expressions that are installed to G8.1 morph folders - These dummy/placeholder expression files have no other function than to prevent the base G8 expressions from loading.

    The dummy/placeholder files are located in;

    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Female 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Base Pose Head\ (255 files)
    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Female 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Expressions\ (24 files)
    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Male 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Base Pose Head\ (255 files)
    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Male 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Expressions\ (24 files)

Please make sure you are removing the files from G8.1 morph folders and not G8 morph folders.

I think what blaz is saying is that finding and removing 500+ files isn't worth the effort if he's only got a few G8 expressions. If you've got a big library of G8 expressions you plan to use on G8.1 then it would be more worthwhile.

It's super easy to make the files invisible to Daz. You just navigate to right place and zip up two of the folders you find there (there are only five or so folders here so they are very easy to find.) No messing with individual files. Takes less than a minute, since the files are tiny and compress quickly.

My thinking was to just start fresh and not have to worry that half a year from now something goes wonky and my characters eyes pop out his nose.laugh

The beauty of zipping the files is that you can replace them easily in case you need them later. If you do end up putting the dummy files back for whatever reason, your old scenes will load fine. The old expressions will simply not be active on your figure's face anymore (I know cause it's happened to me). By all means, only do what you're comfortable with. I don't mean to pressure you. But in my experience, hiding the files is easy and returning them does no harm. Best wishes whatever you decide to do.

No pressure. And I appreciate all the help.

@PerttiA That's the most concise explanation I've seen yet. I will resist saying something snarky about Daz' failing to provide this information. Now, would you happen to know why Daz might have felt it was useful or necessary to prevent the loading of these files?

@certaintree38 Thanks for your explanation. I waded through several pages of the Victoria 8.1 thread looking for this info.

I don't know, maybe someone didn't think, or did way too much thinkingwink

Wouldn't be that much of an issue if the only effect would be the absence of G8 base expressions on G8.1, as the G8.1 does have some base expressions and the face rig, but as G8.1 on DS4.15 creates expression dials for all G8 expressions that are installed and as some of them are using G8 base expressions, you find yourself with an expression library of which 40-60% does nothing and no way to see which ones do work and which ones don't.

In my case, ALL G8F expressions exist and work perfectly along side G8.1 expressions. I have an extensive library of G8F expresions that I was woried I would not be able to use on 8.1 but so far I have not encountered a single expression that does not work well on 8.1

Assuming Daz encountered the same when testing, why would they feel the need to provide any information for a fix that isn't needed? I know there are a number of people having issues with expressions, but either I've made a mistake with my install of the starter essentials update that has resulted in an unitended positive outcome and no negatives, or there is something wrong with other peoples installation that is preventing it from working properly and requiring a fix. I am the worlds biggest pessimist and really don't belive I just got lucky.

if they are deliberately blocking the G8 expressions with these aliases then they shouldn't be selling expressionss that are incompatible with 8.1 as compatible.

they cannot have it both ways and people need to complain and return them citing they are incompatible with 8.1 unless you manually remove stuff from data

I personaly don't give any ducks as not using 8.1 at all because it is a trainwreck IMO devil

Don't have the time to start figuring out, why your's are working, but what would be the reason for DAZ to install 558 dummy files that have no function inside them and which are coincidentally named the same as the base expressions for G8.

Edit; hold on... The order in which the files are being read makes a difference in which of the files will have priority... It is possible that you have an older version of starter essentials installed to an other location, which overrides the effects of the dummy files.

Edit2; The information inside "eCTRLxxxx.dsf" expression files is also stored in "Female 8_1.cache.dsf" and since this information is about the G8 expression that does not get changed with reinstallation of the relevant dummy file in G8.1 expression folder, what would trigger the removal of the information from the cache file?...
