Can DS open WRL Files? (solved - No)

Silly question, I know.

I have a problem. Our Sys Admin was stmpeded into updating our SolidWorks at the end of 2019 by the looming end of software support. In doing so, he upgraded us to 2020 Rev 0. Which has an infuriating bug in it, in the Stress analysis component we can't see the model when any form of mesh is displayed, it just disappears. I have a problem in that I need to measure from a model, but can't see it. I can export  the deformed model in WRL format which I could measure if I got it into obj format. It occurred to me that DS might be able to do the conversion for me (online convertors don't like the file). Does anyone know if it can?

If not, I may have to write an importer for my modeller, but it'd be quicker if DS did it.

The best option would be to take SolidWorks to court & give us working software, but that ain't going to happen in time.

Regards,

Richard.

ETA Unfortunately the answer is No.

  • I ended up writing a basic geometry translator to do the job, took 2 hours to modify an existing program of mine and the result worked on the unusual files I have - all the online translators I tried failed to convert the particular WRL files to OBJ. If anyone needs a very basic geometry translator, let me know & I'll make it available on my website. All texture mapping in the WRL file is discarded, so it's not ideal if online translators will work on the file you have.

    Richard.

I found with the NASA Millkyway Galaxy model Carrara only opens them as points if they are points and you cannot render points blush

Blender was the solution to that creating particles and extruding them as nesh
