We lost power twice today, once while I was checking on a database I just built. /facepalm, there goes that version. I get it rebuilt then leave for lunch. When I come back, I hear the generator running. So I just missed the second power outage. What is going on? It looks like there is a storm approaching, but it's bright and sunny at work right now and the dark clouds appear to be a ways off still

ETA: apparently someone is moving a house and clipped a bunch of lines. wtf. O.o?

I don't t think a crocheted poncho would be much use in rain or wet snow.

Yep - 90s over the weekend, then BOOM! Winter decides to pay a visit for a bit. Apparently the weather here is just as unpredictable as Austin.. :blank:

Shopping Saturday, gloves and a flannel shirt. Maybe a poncho as I've been told wet snow is an issue.. :bug:

...that would definitely do my joints and sinuses in which is why I left the Midwest over thirty years ago. At least here I know everyday is going to be painful to some degree so no surprises.

I need either a job skill that's in high demand or winning the lotto so I can move to somewhere where it's dry and warm most, if not all of the year.

    ...my Wotan's Day Complaints

--Trying to get a grip on Reality (the render engine plugin). Had things going really good last night only to wake up today to find one of the character's skin turned white. Couldn't find anything in the log tab that pointed to why this occurred.
--Keyboard misfires appear to be getting worse. Changed USB ports in case the one I was using as going bad but still getting dropouts...and of course it has to be the more often used characters, "e", "r", "w," "a", and "s". Frustrating having to go back to fix numerous typos, sometimes in the same word.
--Was up late working on my RRRR submission again so rather tired and draggy this morning.
--Really wish Daz had particle physics.
--Every joint, bone, and muscle seems to be aching today. Barometer graph for the weekend looks like a roller coaster.

    Non Complaints

--"Jug" of Advil in the medicine cabinet.
    --Plenty of blankets
--Lots of British tea in the pantry.
    --Big bag of dark chocolate M&Ms;
--Big block of Tillamook Sharp White Cheddar in the fridge to nosh on with crackers and pepperocini
--Cajun blackened fish with Red Beans & Rice for dinner.
--2 bottles of Ginger Beer in the fridge
--Bottle of Potato Wokda in the freezer.
--Bottle of Single Malt Scot's Whiskey from the Isle of Islay in the cupboard.

Think I have all the medicinals I need.

One of the very few regrets I have about leaving Silicon Valley is the weather. Rarely really cold, not all that rainy, does get hot though but not as often as Austin, or even Tulsa. I *could* move back, I guess, but the cost of living is insane and the pace of work so insane that it's not an ideal situation for a (heh) "senior" engineer.

    Le sigh.

...doesn't sound like my kind of place either as I don't have the job skills (nor the stress quotient anymore) necessary to make a enough of living to afford the costs there. Crikey, Portland is becoming expensive enough with all the upscale development that is going on which is driving up housing costs beyond the means of the average working Joe. (who is usually in some low paying service occupation rather than a living wage manufacturing/industrial job)

The migration trend has reversed from 50 years ago with low income earners now being pushed out to the far flung burbs by high housing costs brought on by inner city gentrification and development. Seems Portland still want's to become "Silicon Vally North" however there isn't the technical or industrial base here to support it, nor will there ever be. Timber is what built Portland and drove it's economy, that dried up decades ago.

...around here everything seems to cost a lot lately. ;-) You should see our water bills, A crime for a place where it rains 8 - 9 months of the year.

Bloody keyboard interface, now the "u".

Fixed that as well as a couple other typos.

Seems the whole top row of the keyboard is having issues as the "i" now misses on occasion too.

You should see about your bios...since it does it with different keyboards, it's not the keyboard. Maybe you can get an update for the bios that will fix it. Other than that, maybe it's time for a new computer. Unless that one is still under warranty.

...old XP notebook, not sure if there are any new BIOS updates anymore. A couple of the actual keys on it burned out a while back. The new USB keyboard I got worked for a while, then started having issues

Had the notebook for almost eight years now. Don't have the funds for a new one unless I hit the Lotto (and don't want WIn8).

We got a laptop with Windows 8 on it, and it was upgraded to 8.1. It's not really that bad, you just have to set it to boot in desktop mode. Plus we got a nice utility called StartMenuX that gives you back a start menu and then some, it has some really nice features and is not expensive. We paid $6 for it via bitsdujour.com but they have it on sale for $9.99 at their website, StartMenuX It's worth every penny.

What kind of keyboard did you get. Maybe it was a cheap one. I use the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000...best keyboard I've ever had! I'm on this thing a lot and no carpal tunnel syndrome! It positions your hands properly. I'm a touch typist, so I'm at it all the time. I've had it for several years. The letters are worn off the c, v, b, s, d, f, g, t, m keys. My sister is a hunt and peck typist and she couldn't use it. I just bought a new one because I had a $25 coupon from Staples and it's on sale for $32.50 so I paid $7.97 for it out of pocket! The old one will go in the box and stored as a backup. They're on sale right now, too, at Staples.

...just an inexpensive one. It worked OK with the workstation as well as the notebook for a while so it has to be with either the connection to, or in within the notebook where the breakdown is occurring. I've had even older systems than the one I am using now, and never experienced this.

Don't care for those twisty or split "ergo" keyboards, as because of my arthritis, I am not a touch typist.

Right now can't even spare 100$, let alone 500$ or more. With any new system I'd also have to add an extra 139$ for the home version of of Office2013 as my Office 2K is not compatible with WIn8.

Even if I could afford it, don't need a powerful system with tonnes of bells & whistles like most of what is sold these days. I do all my CG work on the "big box" and use the notebook for my writing, to get online, and to watch/stream films/video. I also don't wish to lose my profile and all my passwords. Being dyslexic (and maybe having a bit of "old timers" as well), I have a devil of a time with passwords as they have to be so cryptic these days, so I have the system remember and store them instead (one of the reasons I failed at the call centre is because I needed to recall all the passwords I needed to use [which also had to be changed every month or two] from memory as we couldn't have any paper notes at our station or store the passwords on the system [security reasons]).

...what is really frustrating is when the "typo" still makes a legitimate word or just leaves a single letter, so the spell checker doesn't catch it.
