I might be getting a new Macintosh computer

A few months ago, all my Macs died on the same day. I really want to get a PC that would let me have the kind of power that DAZ Studio needs. I got the new PC, and it handles DAZ Studio very well. But at the same time, my excitement over DAZ Studio plummeted. I haven't done any new art since the first week after I got the new PC.

I've been looking at the new line of Macs with the M1 processor and Big Sur. These models promise a brave new computer adventure. I mentioned my excitement to my Dad. My birthday is March 21. I have an idea my Dad might get me one of the new M1 Mac Minis.

Right now, I am just anticipating a new computer adventure. DAZ Studio doesn't figure into my desire for the M1 Mac Mini. I will keep my "new" PC to use when/if I get excited about DAZ Studio again,.

Your dad is very generous. Didn't he buy you the PC, too? Happy Birthday, whatever comes your way.

barbult, yes, my Dad is quite generous. He bought me the new PC, and the iMac I got in 2014 (the one that died.)

  • I can say that I love my M1 MacBook Air.  While I can't use DAZ Studio on it yet, the other things I do run quite well.  Battery life is superb, as is the fact that it's completely silent.  The M1 Mac mini is super quiet too and you'll likely appreciate that, Ron.  I listen to a lot of music and the sound of my MacBook Pro's fans while rendering in DAZ Studio can get quite loud.

I've updated my typical apps to M1-native ones.  I bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 2021, which worked well using Rosetta 2, but ended up uninstalling it because of a ton of Adobe Creative Cloud stuff it installed.  I might give last year's Photoshop Elements a try as it doesn't have the CC stuff.

I also tinker with GarageBand and the M1 Macs can open a lot more instruments/tracks than comparable Intel Macs.  I'm very pleased with this as well. :)

I grabbed the 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, 8-core GPU model of the M1 MacBook Air.  Once DAZ software all gets an update for Big Sur/Apple Silicon, I'll add whatever Apple Silicon version of the iMac/iMac Pro/Mac Pro comes out with more storage and RAM.

And Happy Birthday in a few days, Ron!  Enjoy your PC and Mac and I hope you get enthusiastic for using DAZ Studio again soon.

being spoiled for choice may be whats killing your creativity laugh

I know when my graphics card kept crashing my old rig, I yanked it out and rediscovered the joys of other non Nvidia based render engines and actually learnt a fair few new tricks I still use.

    Adversity forces creativity,

leemoon_c43b45a114 thanks for the insight into your M1 experience. I'm glad everything's working ok for you.

WendyLuvsCatz,I suffer from depression, panic attacks, etc. It takes a lot of energy to try making art. But when I do start, I run into problems related to the way DAZ mismanages their content. All too often I can't find things. Also, one day I got all excited about using one of my favorite scenes for some illustrations. Unfortunately, one item wouldn't work because it had bad file references. I filed a ticket at least a year ago, So far nothing has been done to fix the item.

These kinds of problems quickly erode my energy and creativity.

if it causes you depression and anxiety you probably should find something else to do devil

I do art for enjoyment and escape, if it wasn't fun and relaxing for me I honestly wouldn't touch it.,cheeky

also I actually enjoy solving problems and finding workarounds, that drives me rather than frustrates, one doesn't have to though if it's something you don't like, it's all optional, this isn't your job is it?

  • I am not sure how a Mac, or a PC for that matter, is going to deliver on a promise of adventure.  I'd think you figure out what your computer need is, and then get the computer that, within budget, meets those needs.

The computer itself won't bring you joy (except for the unboxing etc, etc) but once that wears off... you will be right back where you started with your "old" new computer.

Methinks, what you really have, isn't a computer problem, its a Covid problem.  The amount of covid related depression is rising rapidly.

I suggest, instead of a new computer, get a new hobby, or try to get outside more... maybe visit and chat with your dad more... be around the people you can be around... and maybe you'll feel a little better.  Maybe your creativity itch will come back... or not.

I don't buy into the PCvsMac Religious war, as, for most things they both can do it... they just go about it differently.  I don't think there will be any joy in chasing the next computer "high" cause, at the end of the day, its all about the same anyway.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Happened to me too.  When I was at my lowest point, dad bought me a PC.  A few years later, still struggling, my stepmother bought a laptop for me so I could do computer repair housecalls without lugging the pieces of a desktop with me.  The "free" devices were not the best devices but they were head and shoulders above the overly patched and held together with spit and chewing gum machines that I had.  Those newer machines helped me claw my way out of the hole I'd been in.  Much appreciated.  I still have those 12-15 year old machines and they still work but have been relegated to semi-retirement.  It's embarrasing to be in your 50's and to have to accept help from your aging parents.

I still get a thrill using this "new PC." The "silicone Macs" (M1 Macs} are totally new computers. They feature Apple's own chipset... no Intel CPUs any more.  That's a new adventure to me.

My problems with DAZ Studio are a result of the way DAZ mishandles its content. The correct solution would be for DAZ to redo their content management from scratch.

Everyone has different experiences. Everyone experiences things differently..

The fact that you don't like the content organisation doesn't mean it is mishandled - as you say, we all have diffrent experiences and needs.

OK, Richard. Some people love to spend hours of their time searching for content, or trying to manipulate a database to recognize their content.

I agree that naming/location conventions would be nice. However, to be fair to DAZ, things are a lot easier to find with DIM. As long as you have some inkling of what the product is named, it will help you find that product in your library right away. And if you don't know the name of the product, you can do a google search or a poser content search to find the name. Then you can use DIM and presto chango, content found. So it really helps a lot. Before using DIM for this, it was a bit of a nightmare.

I hope things get better for you soon! Depression and ennui suck.

certaintree38, thanks for your well-wishes. I am a bit excited going into the weekend. Sunday the 21st is my birthday, and there are some great movies and tv shows coming up.

    Congratulations on the new machine!

But, curious... I'm not sure that Daz will work properly on Big Sur as yet? I was under the impression that was still a "wait for it" thing.

Chronopunk, you are correct. When I want to run DAZ Studio, I will use the "new" PC I got a few months ago.
