PayPal processing issues

The past couple of days we have had some issues with PayPal transactions. Overall the store seemed to be handling them well but some people were having difficulty checking out. It turns out someone at PayPal decided that the product "Cleopatra's Ancient Treasure Bundle" is very suspicious and so has started rejecting transactions through PayPal with that product in the cart. We are going to rename the bundle to see if that allows new transactions to happen.
If you are one of the "lucky" people that has a transaction for that product through PayPal in a Pending status, I would recommend checking your PayPal account. If you tried multiple times and are seeing multiple transactions on PayPal's side but are showing in Pending on our side I would try to cancel them via PayPal. These transactions are likely being held for further review, so I can't be sure if PayPal is going to approve all of those pending transactions when they realize that we aren't actually shipping out historically relevant antiquities (although, I'm a little proud that the product imagery is convincing enough to make them think that we are). Additionally PayPal could decide that all of those pending transactions just look too suspicious to them and they can just cancel all of them.
So here are two takeaways for the future on this one:
- If a PayPal order shows as "Pending" on our side it's because PayPal hasn't given us the final word on if that transaction is a success or not. Retrying a transaction when you already have something "Pending" will typically result in you being double charged, so I would just recommend waiting for PayPal to figure out what it is figuring out and finalize your transaction.
- The regulatory compliance people over at PayPal are a little bit weird. This isn't the first thing that has triggered their systems, an example of when this happened previously it was a product that had the word "Yakuza" in the title. I'm guessing they thought this had something to do with organized crime, but I'm pretty sure most large crime syndicates don't write checks with the memo line of "For Crimes and extortion" but I guess that's why I'm not in a compliance department somewhere.

ROFL!
Wouldn't it be so much easier for law enforcement if they did? XD
This one I suspect they thought was a "naughty" purchase. XD
Great to know, that you, the people at Daz 3D are aware of the issues with PayPal.
It is very covenient for me buying assets from Daz 3D via PayPal
and I do not want to miss the opportunity to support my favorite PA and Daz originals here.
I have just checked with PayPal and they are in the process of returning back my money
on the unsuccessful transaction with Daz 3D yesterday.
Paypal didn't process my purchase from yesterday and refunded it today. I tried to make another purchase moments ago, and it's now pending as well (and likely to refunded tomorrow).
I'm glad that you know what the problem is.
I had this problem yesterday, too (the amount was refunded today). I was going to try and buy her today, but I'll hold off. Which is a shame, really.
I did get to purchase Anderson Hall, and that lovely dForce Jossie Outfit. So, I'm not too disappointed.
Paypal really p- me off. This was a continual thing during the PC+ Sale last October.
It's a pity they don't come to the Daz site, and have a look at the "offending"/potentially fraudulent item themselves.
Well thank you for the explanation. Had the same issue yesterday. So bought it through the rest of my store credit, but with minor products... sad but true.
That's when I started using Amazon Pay. They aren't as particular. A *lot* of products in the store got renamed because Paypal had gotten judgmental about it.
I've tried looking into Amazon Pay, but I couldn't find anything about fees:
- If you get fees for using Amazon Pay itself.
- If you incur charges from your bank for using it (AP).
- If your main payment (e.g. card) would incur fees for paying for something in a different currency).
So, I battled on with Paypal. Although, I may just buy gift certificates/store credit in future, and pay with that.
For the past three plus years, the only purchases I've made with a credit card have been gift cards and whatever minimal related item(s) I ned to pick up for the maximum discount. The upside is the additional ten to twenty-eight percent effective discount on the purchases. The downsides are the requirement to pre-commit the money to Daz purchases AND the tendency to purchase some items I wouldn't otherwise consider.
I have used Amazon pay several times since the store changeover because sometimes Daz doesn't want to accept my CC. I have never seen any fees, and watch my bank account pretty closely. Of course, I am in the US and don't have to convert currency, so I don't know if that changes things. I found a blurb on the official Amazon Pay FAQ that supports the idea of no fees for domestic use. If you are outside the US, you could try asking the bank that issued your debit card. Just a thought.
Today it is happen again with my cart. paypal tells me "Compliance". Daz shop tells me "There was an error processing your transaction".
Is paypal having a problem with the word "cleopatra"?
I did not have the bundle in my cart still ran in to problems with the Paypal checkout around the same time, not sure if it's just the name Cleopatra.
Interesting choice to release another bundle today with again the name Cleopatra prominently featured.
When in doubt about Paypal, buy a gift card instead for the amount required for your purchases, and then make your purchase using the gift card.
Yes, this has happened several times in the past, for products somewhat referencing crime (as a topic, no actual crimes being commited) as well as having words in their name that could vaguely be related to drugs (like weeds, sometimes plants, etc.. It's really sad..)
Same happened to me too. I tried to purchase the Cleopatra bundle twice last night and twice it failed on PayPal and twice I saw a 'pending' refund this morning. Just wanted to add mine in here too so Daz knows how many of us it happened too.
they obviously do not have the brightest sparks working there which makes me worry about them having my bank details a tad
My first attempt was PENDING and then DECLINED / REFUNDED. for the Cleopatra's Ancient Treasure Bundle.
I just tried again to purchase the Cleopatra's Ancient Treasure Bundle and the new Cleopatra's Royal Vizier Bundle and the same thing happens, PENDING
What a pain!
Given the history of the difficulties of PayPal and the uncertainty of actually completing the transaction before losing out on a sweet deal, may I suggest the following workaround.
Fill your cart with whatever you want. Put that tab aside where you won't accidentally close it or refresh it. Note the total. (You could take a screenshot to be safe, or maybe open a tab for each product for future reference).
Open another view of the shopping cart. Empty the cart.
Buy a gift card for the same amount as the original cart. If you are going to pay with cash or credit, you will be paying "full" price anyway. If the gift cards are on sale, even better. If you dislike having store credit idling your money, this will leave nothing left over.
Open the original shopping cart. Do not refresh. From the cart, open each product in a new tab or window if you haven't already. Make sure it goes to a new tab or you will lose the original cart. Add each one to your (new) cart in turn. Once done, you will have your original cart back, hopefully with the same total. Pay with the gift card (or redeem the gift card and use the store credit).
You will get your order in seconds, no doubts, no delays, no bother. (Assuming PayPal approves the gift card purchase). A few extra steps, but sure to work.
