Modifying meshes in DAZ Studio

I have done this many times and now I am having a senior moment (actually I can since I am a senior). I have used a tool in DAZ Studio to select parts of a mesh and either delete them or make them transparent. I did this to make a sign look old or create holes so the object underneath shows. Now I can't remember what I did. Help Please! I know it is simple.

Look for the Polygon Group Editor tool.

I feel really dumb, especially since I have used this tool before. But I can't find it. The tutorial in the reference guide for DAZ 4 doesn't seem to equate to my version which is the latest for DAZ 4.6. Simple instructions would be very helpful.

It is not under tools. Could it somehow have gotten uninstalled? Although I can't imagine how.

Don't think it's called that any more! I'm in the middle of a render else I'd check; I think it's Geometry something Editor now.

Ok, It looks as if it is now the geometry Editor and you can select polygons. But it does not behave as did the polygon group editor. Can someone tell me how to use it. I used to use the polygon group editor to select polygons. When I was finished, there was a hole. I can't seem to use this tool at all for this purpose.

To select individual polygons and create a new surface: Tools > "Geometry Editor". In the viewport, click on one poly to select it then hold Ctrl down and select any other polygons you want (or optionally you can select with a rectangle). To remove a polygon from a group of selected polygons, ALT key and Left Mouse. Right click and choose Geometry Assignment > Create Surface from Selected. (you can also TEMPORARILY hide polygons here with "Polygon Visibility" > "Hide selected", but this isn't saved with the scene. TODO UNVERIFIED-->If you right click and ‘Remove Hidden Facets’ it will permanently delete any hidden areas.) Give the new surface a name. You will then see a new material zone in the "Surfaces (color)" pane. You can set it to 0% opacity to make it permanently hidden. If you want to see what the Uvmapping is like select all the surfaces and go in to UVView mode

Just to confirm what Sean wrote: Hide selected only works for the current session and does not get saved. Remove Hidden is permanent.

Now if only the Geometry Editor had its own panel instead of having to right-click all the time. That would be an amazing time-saver.

Thank you Sean and grubertm -

It now does what I used to do with the polygon group editor which is to create holes in garments. I saved it and named the new surface and reduced the opacity.

It does, actually! If you open the tool settings pane with the geometry editor selected, all the options in the right click menu are available there, and then some.

These are the items I use all the time:
    - change the selection mode between lasso, marquee & drag
    - hide selected/unselected polygons
    - invert selection
    - delete hidden polygons

I do not see those in the Tool Settings.

Check again, maybe you could have been looking in the wrong place or accidentally deselected the tool? When I go to Tools > Geometry editor, then right-click somewhere on my object, I am able to find all these options in the various submenus (see screenshots).

Thank you Sean for taking the time to post those screenshots!

What I was trying to say is that these options are too hidden away in submenus. I wish they were available in the Tool Settings Pane.

Going to be honest, I didn't even know about the right click menu before this thread- I've just always used the tool settings pane. Those are some pretty handy options that I didn't even realize existed! Now I wish they were in the tool settings pane too.

  • While I am literally 10 years TOO LATE I am going through the learning process now but this thread helped me learn where the darn geometery editor is because since I usually work w Blender/Unreal I thought it would be easy to change the geometry of my mesh. I LOVE blender for characters and assests and while Daz is okay, it SEVERELY needs an update and makeover. Like WHY on EARTH hide those most important tools away? I couldnt find it at all as it was in 3 sublevels down its just dated & redundant for newbies at least when in Blender the tab is already opened whether it be sculpt/layout/ettc..TY ALL
