Posing a figure with a prop

Hey everyone! newbie here

Im making a few scenes for a commission. My main problem right now is the base figures im using (genesis 8) arent posing with the prop. I've looked into parenting, grouping and hierarchical poses but im still confused.

everytime i click on a pose preset i get this message (see attached file)

Any advice?

The pose you selected includes two figures. You need to have all the figures in the scene and everything selected for that pose to work
