Blacksmith3D? is it worth it?

I am very new to trying to work with 3D and I have now just reached the point where I feel the need to modify textures and now even create my own.
I have spent time trying to paint directly to a Map in Photoshop and I really am tired of that fast. As if in answer to my frustrations it looks like there is a handy little tool Blacksmith3D (http://www.blacksmith3d.com/ ) that just got upgraded and is on discount to $80. I says that it takes care of all the import/export dance with poser/daz and I was able to at least import a figure for painting with the trial version

I am hoping that people here would have some opinions about if this would be an OK tool for a hobbist/novice that is not trying to create hyper realistic images.

Thanks to everyone for their consideration.

Thank you so much for these links and help finding this topic (my search was not very fruitful)

I have BlackSmith3d and also 3d Coat, and I use 3d Coat a LOT more.

Blacksmith was cheaper, at least when I bought it, but 3d Coat's interface was much easier to learn and use. Interfaces of course are hugely a matter of personal preference, so I would try a trial version of each if I were you, see which one you find easier.

In the past I've also used Blender for 3d painting, but they broke painting in the 2.6's (prohibitively massive lag on many systems) and I'm not sure if it's fixed yet in 2.72.

It does what it needs to do but the interface is utterly dreadful.

Yes, and with 6.x the UI has changed to a more standard type.

I am really glad to know that other people were looking at the interface and were a little thrown off.

I did take the plunge and purchased the basic version. I have not had time to play with it much till this weekend.

I noticed that there was a way to have the tool open up the images in Photoshop for finer work, I am really excited about that - I like my actions and brushes.

I hope to actually explore the displacement, transparency and bump tools as well - time to make a pretty ultraman suit
