Currently I have ati radeon hd 4800 series graphic card. I had once found the right driver but that got lost since the last computer reset. DS won't open but Carrara will open once I put in the serial number.

What driver do I need in order for the graphic card to work properly?

I got DS to work but with the recommended screen resolution, the library contents are almost too small to read.

Note that is a 7-8 year old Video card. Also note that ATI cards of that age were notorious about claiming to support certain OpenGL feature sets but only partially supporting the standard.

I am thinking of getting a new graphics card asap, but I am trying to figure out what to do until then.

What would be a good graphics card for 3d art purposes?

    I am currently using a 1GB AMD RADEON™ HD6450 - DVI,HDMI,VGA - DX® 11

Not saying it's the best, but price is always crucial as far as I am concerned, having very finite financial resources. This works well for me, considering the price.

I have a Nvidia GTX 570 with 2GB of RAM. It is still pretty expensive. It will cost you about $160-$250

Thanks for the suggestions. These will help me start looking for what is out there. Also have to figure out my budget and how soon I need to get it.

edit: what do I do with the old video card?

You can get a GT 640 or 740 with 4GB of RAM for around $100. Note the 740 is the most recent of the 40 series currently available though the 940 will probably be out soon.

What other software do you use in your art? Do you play serious games on your system?

    Get the free Slimdrivers: http://www.driverupdate.net/

This free tool will definitely find the correct up-to-date driver for your card (and the rest of your system for that matter). I use this tool myself to keep my drivers up-to-date.

I had once found the right driver but that got lost since the last computer reset.

I am not sure if DAZ Studio ever worked for you with this video card? So I am assuming from your quote above that it was so it should work again with the up-to-date driver.

My old Radeon X800XL, which is older than yours, works and if you made yours work with DS then I'm not sure you need to buy another card.

I recently bought an Nvidia GTX 750 Ti which has 2 Gb Vram in order to use it with Blender Cycles and Luxrender. Price should be around 150$

If it wasn't for these two apps, I wouldn't have bought a new card. That depends on what you do with your computer

For your problem with Font Size I'm afraid you'll have to lower your working resolution if you can't see anything in the content Library.

You can adjust Windows's font size and some applications will use that setting . But not DS.

The problem with the card is that Windows keeps wanting to use the MS driver but most of my art software does not work with the microsoft driver.

I don't think I ever got such behaviour. Can you post a screenshot of the Windows message as well as a screenshot of your device manager tree espescially the part with the graphic card?

I would but it is not doing it right now. It is working correctly now.

I reset my computer when diagnosing my keyboard problems but having this problem again. I am having difficulty installing the right driver. The Microsoft driver is the messed up one.

Catalyst 12 or 13 should work with your card

As a Radeon 58xx ower I recommend the Catalyst 12 drivers as they are better for gamming. I know from my own experiance with this card that they Catalyst 13 drivers will make the card perform slower in games then the Catalyst 12 drivers

How is GL performance on the 750Ti? I'm eyeballing that one since the price is good and seems like a nice gaming card too. I recently had a GTX460 die, my backup card was fried, managed to find an old radeon x500 and working drivers for now. It's a little painful.

Kulay Wolf, are you positive it's a 4800? The AMD drivers should still install what it needs anyway, it's not that old of a card that you should be having this kind of driver issue.

That is what device manager says it is.

It has good enough OpenGL perf compared to my former card. But it fails a bit behind my notebook's card which is a Quadro 2000M. I was hoping it would be better but pro cards always have better OpenGL drivers. At least it makes the job well enough in Blender. I don't really count DS as I don't really had performance problem till now with my old card. The 2GB Ram are enough for a mid sized scene provided you configure DS for Best performance

@Kulay wolf: your problem roght now may just be that MS update would like to install the MS driver because it considers it better for whaterver reason (my guess but it's hard without more information). If that is the case just ignore
