Rearranging My Runtime

Years ago, it was possible to rearrange your runtime folder so that (for example) all of Victoria's clothing was in one folder, all of Michael's clothes in another. Is that still possible?  I'm going nuts trying to find all of the items that go with any given figure.

Thanks!

  • I would recommand you do it via Categories in DAZ Studio, that way you can even have the same item in multiple categories. Daz would still know when to find the item so opening older scene would still work. Uninstalling and reinstalling items would also be easier. But the process to do it is slower than using windows. If you move items they should still work but metadata would be broken and daz may have issue when opening older scenes.

Its possible to write a script to automate much of it, but I am not aware if any that is published. The process i found works best for the script is get all item in default categories, figure out its generation by compatability base, sort item into categories based on content type and put materials for the item under sub categories.

  • For the most part, any file can be in any folder you want.

The only exception is Genesis related morph files(DSF/DHDM), they have to be in the data folder, due to the way DS is setup.

Everything else is just a matter of path definitions in the file.

If you want to avoid the various csm problems, you can use 'link' files, that create a pseudo copy of the original file, so you don't have to move the original.

Just be aware to move them in explorer and not DS, as DS will create a copy of the original file and not the link file.

To create a Link file, select an item(or items), right click>Create Link for Asset...

It will open a popup to a save directory, by default this will be the top most directory currently mapped in CDM.

You can create a new directory and put it at the top of the list, this is what i do, so all the link files go in the link directory i created.

I then just have to hit the enter key when the explorer window opens.

What you're proposing to do is pretty much how I have my Content-Runtime-Libraries-Character folder organized. I set it up this way and maintain it through Windows Explorer. Here's a small screenshot as an example.
