Uninstalling Starter Essentials

Well, for me at least, the G2/G3/etc. "starter essentials" are not only non-essential, they are downright annoying.

So I started DIM, and under the Installed tab I selected "uninstall" for each of the starter essentials packs, and that seemed to work fine. And it also deletes them from the Content Library. But in Smart Content now there's a bunch of icons with an "oops, can't find it" exclamation on it.

So is the fix to select something under Content DB Maintenance (like "Re-import Metadata")? Or is that gonna explode everything and make me pull my hair out?

Thanks.

Okay, well "Re-import metadata" and "Process metadata queue" only made things worse. And this is what makes me insane about the database design in D|S. I've been using it for years, and I still can't wrap my head around how it works.

Right click on the icon, then try the "show asset in" area, use the "mapped folder". If that doesn't work try browsing to the file location. That should give you enough clues as to what could be going here. Under normal circumstances the entry in your smart contents disappears as soon as a file got removed. Considering that this didn't happen I think there might be some left over material. Perhaps something which also uses the starter essentials stuff, don't forget that many other products rely on this as well.

If you remove the starter essentials then you may find a lot of you purchased characters will not either display correctly or not load at all as you will not have the required base models & morphs that are required.  The Starter Essentials are part of the core system.

Thanks. Darn. I was hoping to get rid of those annoying pirate outfits and swords and stuff I'll never use but it takes up so much space when trying to find stuff. Maybe the fix is to just re-categorize them into a junk folder in Smart Content or something.

You can always de-classify those items (as I like to call it) which would remove them from the start content pane entirely. Find one of those products which bug you, for example the 'dark storm sword' (?). Rigth click on it and show the asset in the mapped folder, you'll be taken to the folder in the content library pane. Howver over the item and note the filename. In this example that would be "dark storm sword.duf". Now either right click on the "content library" pane itself or right click on the shown folder which contains the prop, and then select "edit metadata".

Now change the type either into something not supported or make it empty. Without a type the smart contents pane won't be able to show the item thus it'll disappear, yet you don't risk disrupting your library.
