He was a great character, sometimes maybe a bit too outspoken, but then he was indeed a character and spoke his own mind. He will be sorely missed,
Such a shame he didn't quite make the 100. We all wanted to know if he would get a telegram from the Queen.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45

Um, they did live in the same house, at least some of the time. Admittedly, they were big houses, but would a telegram really have been necessary?

Sorry, typical British joke. Everybody used to get a telegram from the Queen when they reached 100. Recent years it has been a birthday message rather than a telegram, but the telegram was the thing that was always remembered.
It makes me sad that he is dead, he was a top bloke despite his flaws, had a terrible childhood, an original self made man who gave up his career to support the Queen.
There are not many left that understand what duty and honour are.
Steve.
He lived a historic life, unique to his circumstances. Ultimately, he served his duty, whatever his duty was at the time, and kept his opinions of it largely to himself. He was undeniably beloved by his queen, and I wish her all of my deepest condolences as she adjusts to life without the soulmate who anchored her throughout her reign.

I knew he had lived a long life but I was shocked to see he was 99! I was watching some stories and reading some publications after the news broke because I did not know much about the royal family and now learning about his life... what a life he lived.
As my Mum says, "You don't speak ill of the dead" (something that doesn't seem to apply to Facebook).
Apparently, if you want a telegram (for a 100 birthday), you have to contact (and request) one from the Palace, and it gets sent to that Centenarian (my Mum has been watching a lot of documentaries about the Royal Family, lately).
I'm not a "Royalist", but I feel sad for the Queen. She's lost a soulmate (if you believe in that stuff), and a huge part of her life.
My and my neice by accident wandered to the front of Buckingham Palace on her spring break vacation just as the Queen and Prince Phillips was going by in a very DAZ-like coach. I even got a picture of them but we didn't realize they were in the coach at the time.
What was really mean was I was visiting Wexford when Queen Mum died Easter week and the newspaper actually had a picture of guy with a protest sign outside a castle or some official building that stated "It's about time." I think she was 104.

Yes. I remember my neighbour got one when she reached 100. My Gran missed it by a few years.

....longest living consort.
Interesting as I receive morning newsletters from The Guardian but there was no mention there.
What a profound and prolonged sense of duty that man had... respect.
What a life.

Sorry, hope he didn't suffer, I was worried when they took away his driver's license.

De mortuis nil nisi bonum
And please avoid politics.
To live to 99 is a rare gift to be treasured!
RIP Prince Phillip.

RIP Prince Philip.
That would have been funny :)
He might have said: "to be married for more than 70 years, hardley anyone would have survive that."
Chapeau, your royal highness.

Apparently they had been spending more time together because of covid, which is good.
I agree on all points. RIP
