Tanlines from image editor?

I don't use G8M (only G3M) and I have a requirement to add tinlines but can't figure out how. I have the G3F version of SkinBuilder but can't use it with the males. So I am wondering if anyone has done this with an image editor. I have Affinity Photo and Gimp (but not Photoshop). I'm guessing I would have to create a mask of the skin area - perhaps I could use a template from some shorts or underwear? But I'm not sure how to apply the shading to the skin.

Any ideas welcome.

I think a l.i.e would be in order plus a layer effect (look up multiply, screen, darken, in photoshop to see what I mean).

V3Digitimes has a product set to do tanned skin and tan lines on G3 characters. For the males you need https://www.daz3d.com/tan-lines-for-genesis-3-male-and-michael-7 and https://www.daz3d.com/wet-and-tanned-skins-for-genesis-3. She created a custom shader. The product promos give an idea of the way the masks are made. Maybe you could do something similar with the diffuse overlay layer for the tanned skin. I have the V3Digitimes products, so I've never tried to do it other ways.

Apply the G3M skin to a G3F, do the tanlines in SkinBuilder and save.

I had tried that - I also thought it should work. I have the UV transfer utility between G3F and G3M. But, sadly, it tears at some (not all) of the seams on G3F.

Thanks, @barbult - can't understand why my store search didn't find that.  Nevertheless, I have had to wishlist it right now because I don't have the funds. Ahh and I see that both products are required. Definitely a wait for a sale!

I have never really played with L.I.E. so maybe I can find a tutorial. I was thinking in terms of a layer mask and then tweaking with screen/multiply, etc. but, again, I am no expert on those techniques so if anyone has any tips I would appreciate them.

What if you just load the G3M textures into respective slots on G3F, never minding if there are some seams while they are on G3F - Use skinbuilder to do the tanlines and again load the textures as they are into G3M

Not difficult at all in GIMP. I suggest you dupe and rename the character folder, then just load and dupe your texture on a new layer and adjust color/saturation to your liking, dupe and hide the edited layer and erase what you don't want changed, then export with a new name. You will then need to change the texture on on the model in DS. I recommend you label your layers well and save often. You might need to do this on multiple channels depending on the texture/model.

The L.I.E. thing works like this:

    1. First, download the template for the g3m figure from your account > product library > Genesis Male 3 templates
    2. Next, open the template in your image editor of choice and use the torso
    3. Next, create a new layer in your image editor and paint where you want tanlines in white, select the white areas and fill the non tanline area with black (I would add a little blur since tanlines tend not to be razor sharp
    4. Delete the template bottom layer and replace with a copy of the actual torso texture (when you are downloading the template, you can also download the zip of the textures of your choice
    5. Now you can play with the blending modes.  Load the real torso texture below your painted tanlines.  Select the tanline layer and play with the blending modes and opacity (I am thinking overlay and 50%) to start (this shows the blending modes of Photoshop but pretty much every image editor has the same blending mode and this has nice pictures - https://expertphotography.com/photoshop-blending-modes/ just click no if they try to sell you something)
    6. Note the blending choice you want (such as Soft Light, 30% opacity), save the image as a jpg
    7. Now load your character with his appropriate texture
    8. Go to the Surface Tab and the figure's torso in the Surface Tab.
    9. Click on the little thumbnail of the texture. A menu appears, choose Layer Image Editor.
    10. Click to the zoom to fit. Click the plus to add a new layer. Make sure your new layer is the top item.  Adjust the opacity  and the blend mode to suit your needs.
    11. Click done.
    12. If you want to start over, you can delete the layer.
    13. Save the material preset wth a unique new name

here is a quick L.I.E. tutorial video: https://youtu.be/ORo_XZRFl4A

Just using the G3M UVs on G3F so she can wear the skin won't work as the overlays are meant for textures using G3F UVs.

What you would need to do is first to use Map Transfer to transform the G3M textures into ones using the G3F UVs, then use Skin Builder over the “G3F version” of the skin.

But even then there's no guarantee it would look ok on G3M.

    Wow!

And here was I thinking that I was asking a question which probably had a simple answer. Ah well, I can only thank you all for the detailed responses and I'll try to make something of them. Makes you appreciate the skills that the PAs have when creating those skin overlay products.
