Need help changing a texture map (if I'm calling it the right thing)

As far as I can tell, the Ceremonial Horse Armor for DH2 is missing stirrups for the saddle. So I also loaded the saddle for the fantasy dark knight armor, which has stirrups. I ran RSSY's Iray to 3DL script on it and hid the saddle itself, then I went to use a metal shader to match the boot ring to all of the other metal sections in the scene and realized the ring and the leather strap the ring is attached to is one single texture map when I used DzFire's Real Metals hammered silver shader. The whole thing, including what should look like leather, turned silver. So what I need help with .... how do I create a new material zone for the boot ring so I can change only that?

To create a new material zone, use the geometry editor and select the polys of the boot ring and then create a new material zone
I do this a lot. This always helps: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/42088/
Ugh! I looked up a couple of videos on how to do that, but it's not working on my screen as easily as it does in the videos. The sections the tool selects/highlights as I brush over it are sporadic. Very frustrating.
Thanks for that ... I've made a copy of it and saved to a word doc so I don't it when I need it again :)
