Question regarding TEMP files (mainly r.png)

Ok little background: Windows update, more specific the forced reboot.
(Guessing a lot of people see where this is going)

Yesterday i got home from work and went  to my computer to see if my render was done so i can save it for post work.

When i turned my monitor on i allready started cursing, the log-in screen.

I know wednesday is windows update day.
I know i can manipulate the reboots to a degree. But it requiers either adjusting some regkeys and or disabling forced reboots in the scheduler but none of these solutions are foolproof. Idealy i want to be promted to reboot.

Anyways since windows isn't likely to do anything about this "for security reasons"... Funny enough my work computer doesn't force reboot (at least not always)

So the question is regarding the r.jpg.
Simply put, how does it work? So far only in 1 case i have found the r.png there (and was verry happy about it) but i cant figure out when it is written when it is deleted can i control its behaviour?

Thanks in  advance.

(fixed some typo's)

It is written while you render, and will usually be deleted when DS closes.

And no, you can't control what DS does with temp files.

    It's a .png actually:  C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4\temp\render\r.png

However (at least in later versions of DS) it isn't being created/updated before the render finishes by itself or whenever it's being canceled by the user, so if Windows just shuts down DS while it's rendering (?) I don't think it will be there anyway (depends on what DS does when (and how) it's being closed).

But if it's Windows 10 Pro you can disable updates completely, according to MS (at least on version 1809 which the screenshot is from).  Press Windows Key + R, and open gpedit.msc.  Scroll down to Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update and open Configure Automatic Updates.  Select Disabled to disable all updates.

    I am using build 19042

And i dont want to disable the manual update just the reboot.
I was just looking for a way outside of windows.

Like an auto save function. Best thing i can come up with would be a batch render of 1 render.

    Anyways, thanks for your answers.

You can disable updates in any version; might require you to use an app, or just hack the registry - or turn off the specific features, which is what the apps do.

You can do that also from that configuration window - just select Enabled instead and then option 2: "Notify before downloading and installing any updates."  I've been using that option for over two years on my render PC and the updates dialog pops up every day but I just close it and it doesn't do anything then unless I choose to update myself.

This issue has been around for an eternity it seems like.  It WOULD be nice if someone was able to create a script that would keep an updated temporary copy of the render.  I just lost power to my desktop and after getting it back going, I looked for my "r.png" and sadly, no luck.  A 2560px render at 99% convergence quality level 5 when the power went out.  Particularly brutal.  At any rate, I am surprised to learn that you can no longer rely on good 'ol "r.png".  It hasn't always saved me, but it has saved me enough times to be well appreciated.

Daz, pretty please, can someone cobble something together to handle this?  It really is a big deal sometimes.  :D

If I haven't paused the render at some point, I can't usually find the temporary file. But I have started pausing longer renders on occassion to get an in-progress version that's better than nothing. If it's really important, I'll save the r.png file elsewhere. If not, then I pause and start the render back up again.

Would be nice if it did start saving the r.png file automatically again.
