GamePrint Review-

As there is simply not enough information on Daz regarding this service I am posting my review and ongoing adventure in my attempts to get a figure printed by this company. This is an ongoing tale and will update this thread as this occur but at this point, I feel I need to post something on the forums in case others might be considering the purchase of a 3D printed figure.

I decided to pull the trigger on a 9" figure, so performed a fresh install of the latest 4.15 and installed the plug-in app directly from the store first thing.

There is no mention of bases offered by Gameprint so through some digging I found an old thread that mentioned if you design your own base they will print it and it will be subtracted from the overall height of the figure. So designed up a small base for my figure to stand on.

The walkthrough instructions are horrible for using the app. since I am an old school resin recaster, was very excited to see what I could get based on a figure out of Daz instead of modeling clay for weeks. But not having printer experience I did not know what the option to order a .stl for printing was, it seemed I needed to order the .stl first then submit it to have my figure printed. So went ahead and ordered it.. Luckily I only ordered the cheap version not the $50 .stl. I soon after found out that this is a file you can use to print your own figures using a home printer. Lucky I ordered the cheap one.

I went ahead and went through the order process, appeared to upload my model, but didn't know what to do with the .stl file at that point so emailed their sales email addy asking what to do with the file?? (March 8th) as of this writing it has been 7 weeks and I have still never received a response from that first request when I was ready to pull the trigger to order the model. I eventually figured out my error on my own.

After much reading and no response from their support decided I had made a small $2 error, my bad, the cost of learning and uploaded and ordered a 9" model $344 with $50 shipping and a delivery date of May 22nd listed on the order.  3 1/2 weeks go by and I get an email from Faisal who says he is with customer service (linkedin says he is a marketing manager). And they didn't receive the textures for my model can I sent them all of the associated textures and the full daz scene, no info no how to do that is provided.

I responded within the hour that I could but there is no option on their website to upload files nor an option through the app to upload individual files. but no response to that email.

Another day goes by I reemail and try calling their support number.. I leave a message. no call back no response

the next day, at this point I have already made a copy of my runtime>textures folder and have removed all textures not associated with my submitted statue. Since I did a fresh install on another ssd it wasn't too hard to manually pull everything out. I email again that the textures folder was running 1.3gb compressed, do they want a drop box or a mega?  No response to my email requests again. So I start searching through Daz forum for other people who may have had dealings with Gameprint... lot of redit users buying star trek ships through a different company name, not a lot of daz feedback but the few I see are saying they like their models, so giving them benefit of the doubt. I found a contact number listed in the forums here and reached a Taslaq who informed me he was on the production side and would let Faisal know to get back to me.

Another day goes by, no call back, I found a third number on my purchase receipt email from mixed dimensions  (is it me or do they have an awful lot of different company names associated with their service) this phone number goes to an individual's voice mail, not a company mailbox. No call back

Now it is the weekend, so no call back or email response this week.

The following week I did FINALLY received an email that their app no longer works with Daz4.15 and I needed to zip up my textures folder and put on dropbox for them.

Sent several emails the last one basically just stating to let me know they are at least receiving my communications

received a confirmation that they were received.....

OMFG!!!!! YAAAAAAAS email received item shipped via USPS on April 22nd.. actually ahead of the completion date. Super excited. BUT for the cost of shipping the statue went out USPS slow boat, so the waiting begins again

One week later April 28th (today) I received notification from USPS that my package was returned to sender for incomplete labeling on the delivery package. I checked my original order and my address is correct on the site. so sent an email to the support address to have them confirm the ship to address. I'm a little concerned that now it will be another week back to San Mateo, CA then another week returning back to me, adding another two trips all the way across the country to get to me for a fragile item. I've seen a number of pictures of their Star Trek ship prints arriving broken so am super nervous at this point. I will certainly post a follow up once I hear anything back and one I finally receive the statue but so far I must say if you are considering ordering, 1. use a pre4.15 version of Daz Studio. and 2. Caveat Emptor!!!!!

Thanks for posting this - looks like something to avoid until we get confirmation the app works in 4.15

The GamePrint: 3D Print Plugin (SKU: 45471) was released back in October of 2017... initially the plugin cost me $9.58 — but later they made it free.

The minimum requirements are listed as...

    Daz Studio 4.9.4.117
    Windows 7
    Mac OS 10.10.5 Yosemite

Those very likely may have been the version numbers of Daz Studio software and operating systems that were available when it was released.

It would be nice to know which version of Daz Studio that it stopped working properly... the product page listing says Compatible Software: Daz Studio 4.15, which sounds incorrect based on your experience!

How had you isntalled the content? it may be that the plug-in is being thrown by the new (but not that new) structure for products installed through DS itself.

Jeebuz... for that level of effort I coulda sculpted the figure, made an RTV silicon mold and pressure cast several copies in decent quality urethane resin (BJB or Hapco)... not to mention I could sell the copies to recoup the materials cost.

Good to know though, lots of times you only hear about glowing reviews.

  • I was informed thatthe app was incompatible from Gameprint: "It seems like Daz studio update isn't fully compatible with our plugin. The texture files don't show up on our side." I actually did a fresh install of win10 on a smaller SSD and then installed 4.15 on that install, other then Chrome it was the only thing I installed on that image. as far as installing the models I just did an old school drag and drop as I'm a bit OCD about cleaning up files after a project so don't really use DIM.

A bit of an update though, after much run around with USPS on the phone this morning and a drive out to my local branch, I was informed that the return to sender was actually a carrier error, they had loaded it on the wrong delivery truck and the local carrier used the wrong code when scanning it at the end of the day, it "should" be on a truck to me today. So this last little bit is NOT Gameprints issue at all. I'll certainly follow up with the end result but do feel a bit bad about my first post at this point, you may notice it was posted middle of the night after a long binge of surfing USPS.com and getting nowhere so needless to say I was not in a terribly good mood when I wrote it. If the figure looks dandy I will eat my hat and take it all back. I'll let you know.

If I were GamePrint I think they should rewrite their plugin to use the DAZ2Blender exporter or one of the other DAZ to 3rd party model exporters.

    $50 FOR SHIPPING?!

Is that the normal price, or "pandemic shipping" price? I wanted to buy a candle on another site. £50 for shipping! I live in the same country, ffs!

Months ago, it seemed to me that they (Gameprint) were prioritising Star Trek: Online starship models.

After what you were charged. It'd (probably) be cheaper to buy a 3D printer, and print the model yourself.

This guy knows what I'm talking about!!! ;)

OK, so here is my post product arrival review. I do wish I could now change the title of this thread...it is primarily positive, but it is not without it's negative points.. without further ado:

    T

The model is definitely 9" tall in fact I would say I came out with a few extra cm. with the base included. The pinning into the base from the figure is excellent, the figure fits nice and secure. In general I am impressed with how some of the detail work came out. the fishnet hose was spot on, the design on the tartan skirt was flawless, (Pic01,02, 06) I can almost read the titles on the largest book in the book stack. I would NOT be able to reproduce that detail by hand painting. As far as the texture issue goes.. there in lies the rub. Anything that had a metallic shader applied came out as just white plastic, she had a gun-white gun(pic03), bracelets with metal spikes - white spikes(pic04) (and check out those finger nails, Whut???). Couple of other items did not carry over the textures as well. she had black Louboutin shoes with red bottoms, those are white(pic05). What gets me is they ask for renders to be posted at the time of the order from each side of your figure, which I did a 1600x1200 image from every angle but guess they don't check the picture against what the machine is going to print. I also never received any notification after the print was done with maybe some pics to confirm the item before shipping it out.

As far as shipping, the return to sender thing was totally USPS, can NOT fault Gameprint on that. BUT I was a little surprised at the packing job they did on the figure. The figure itself was just twisty tied to a piece of cardboard and then placed inside a small bubble wrap envelope. there were three pieces and each was loose in the box then inside of another air pack so the pieces could move freely inside the package while in transit. There was indeed some breakage on the figure. Bracelet spikes fell victim to transport, and I could not find them in the figure envelope, so who knows if the break occurred prior to boxing. And the Machete was pressed up against the cardboard while shipped and so she is carrying more of a short curved scythe then a machete.

There is an issue with some of the plastic that is "gummi". In my world this occurs when part A and part B of a resin do not mix well, not sure if that's how it works in the 3D printing realm too. But there are several spots on the kit that exhibit this issue (Pic 07) and over time deterioration occurs in my experience with resins. The face was somethig I worried about the pic I'm attaching doesnt do it justice, it really looks pretty good. and the lips are actually slightly parted so they were able to get that detail in.. very impressive.

The final Judgement: The white plastic items, I can hand paint to get them correct. All in all, the product is good. If you have a character that you are overjoyed with that you'd like to see IRL. Then it's probably worth dishing out the bucks deluxe the service costs. Am I pleased with the product? Yes. Would I order from them again? When they fix the issue with the app uploading textures -YES. I have already sent them an email asking about any sign of an update to the app.

For going from a concept to a figure on the desk I feel $400 was reasonable, I've paid much more for unpainted resin kits at Wonderfest in the past so Gameprint gets a 4-ish out of 5 stars for a size comparison, here she is between a 1/3 and 1/4 resin kit. then 1/16th Gamera so you can judge sizes next to a space turtle.

First... Pic 04... not "Whut", but "What The F**k?"... Yeesh... ow... Those finger nails... (fingerhorns? Finger hooves?)... That hurts my eyeballs. I want to fix that so I can sleep tonight...

Second... Pic 07 didn't post, but thats probably irrelevant anyway as I'm just guessing what it looks like...so sorry if this might not be helpful, but I had a similar issue years ago with a Horrrrrrrrrrrible printed part a client sent me to try and fix and do finishing work on... I used a small UV LED light I had for curing UV catalyzed epoxies and through trial and error I was able to stabilize the sticky areas...

but in that case I was pretty sure the crappy print was made on a printer that used UV cured material... The problem is the printers have very focused, very powerful UV diodes to cure the resins, and the small penlight UV LED (similar to the thing dentists use) is nowhere near as powerful... but if for some strange reason you have one of those or can get a hold of one or some other focused UV light, it might be worth a shot to try.

I don't know if you still do resin casting or if you use this method too, but it's something I do to avoid having unmixed resin... mix part A and B into a Ziplock Freezer bag, squeeze as much air out as possible and kneed the bag to thoroughly mix the material... when satisfied with mixing, snip one corner of the bag to pour the resin... either into the mold or whatever you pour with... I use blank caulking cartridges to "injection mold", but disposable ketchup/mustard bottles with the long nozzles work great too... Of course if you are using really quick curing resin that might not be practical... or if you are using static mixer nozzles it's completely unnecessary... the cool thing about the ziplock bag thing is it cuts down on the amount of air that gets mixed in, like typically does in mechanical mixing or stirring.

I use Ziplock Freezer Bags because they are made of thicker material and they are usually close easier and more reliable... I wouldn't recommend anything thin or with that plastic zipper thing that helps you close the bag, it's far less reliable.

And sorry if that was unnecessary or redundant info.

Edited to add- I see the other pix now... Pic 7 looks a little like what one defective area looked like (the micro bubble),  most of the other areas were just tacky/sticky... but, the area where the bubbles were present was also at a 90° corner/wall section...

By the way, the prints look good otherwise... especially the plaid fabric and fishnet, that's really super-hard to hand paint.

Thanks for the post, I was thinking of ordering a figure as well but was wondering whether they were still alive. That was really helpful!

  • Thanks a bunch for the idea of the UV light I'll deffinetly give it a shot! there are several small spots on the model that need to be treated. I was able to kind of stick a finger nail into the plastic a little bit so it's not completely uncured but just concerning. I'm very much a Japanese Giant Robot / Anime resin kit builder and primarily use Smooth-On resins due to the 1-to1 ratio, you can buy drums of the mold and resin at a time, and it does react super fast so not sure the baggie trick would work. But I have lost a couple dining room tables due to spill over so I am grooving on the Ketchup bottle idea. I'm a bit torn here as I have shelves of figures still to pin and paint, so I think had this been a perfect figure I might have been in some real danger of having to switch to Ramen noodles for every meal. :)

Yeah, I use slower materials, also one-to-one, but I use pressure tanks with heater bands to cure the material... generally, I have 10-12 minutes before the stuff starts to gel... Smooth-On resins are very good, but if you ever need really good clear materials or elastomers, check out Hapco inc, it's probably a lot pricer, but they have a lot of very specific materials that are good for certain specifications and tolerances... but they mostly do best with either pressure or vacuum casting.

Also if you try out the ketchup bottle idea, you may want to cut a strip of duct tape or electrical tape before hand and the moment you fill the bottle, seal the lid/neck tight.

I had a bad bottle once and the cap blew out and I lost 16 ounces of resin on the shop floor and my sneakers which really sucked to clean up... and I imagine that would suck lots more on a dining room table.

  • Posting a quick follow up to this just for completeness. After looking at the hoofs on my model's fingers I did try emailing/ calling/ emailing some more to Mixed Dimensions support with no response. But what I learned was they make a LOT more money from the Star Trek online group, and someone from the Reddit STO thread told me post to the StarTrek Online Gameprint fan group. Sure enough, I did along with the pictures I posted here and within 15ish minutes I had a response via messenger that they would fix the situation. So my recommendation is cross post if you have an issue.

They got back to me in a day and stated they could either refund me on my first model or offer me 30% off my next order, which as noted before. I’m a “figure” kinda guy so maybe this was a one off. I submitted another order and after a few weeks got the same email that the app was n olonger compatible with Daz and they needed all the textures setn seperately. I think since I raised the alarm in the STO group Faisal said he would send me images of the fixed print before they produced it, so bonus.

I just received my figure today so here’s my feedback on whether that was a one off instance. Drumroll. They are sooo close to being perfect, I do still have a couple items to point out.

My character had a fishnet bikini bottom which they told me they could not print the Gens on a figure (even though the first figure DID have the gens printed, just an FYI you're rolling the dice if your charachter has Gens), but whatever I don’t display them upside down. They could either make the bikini a solid color or a flesh tone with the fishnet overlay. I opted for the fishnet with skin tone underneath, which I guess skin tone on their printer is grey because the bottoms are pretty much a solid color grey. But not a deal breaker

Everything else came out pretty excellent on the printing side. nicely detailed.

My only complaint which is kind of a big one. They packed the figure pretty well, but they neglected to tighten the twisty ties that held it to the cardboard so the figure bounced around inside of the box for a week and got pretty scuffed up in transit. The worst part was the girl’s nose and chin were rubbed black, so she looks like she has a goatee, and this is after about 20 minutes of rubbing her face with a q-tip to try to clean it off. So kind of dropped the ball at the 1 yard line on the packing, but the print job was much MUCH better this time.

I had this issue on my last order too. I THINK the Plug-in looks for the textures in the "normal place" and if the vendor (or Daz) does anything other than what's expected, the plug fails to grab the textures.

I guess this because not all of the texture-grabs failed. I do not know how or why this happens.

    1) They may have sent you a list of what textures failed.

    2) Use the Surfaces Tab to navigate to (usually) the Diffuse channel and grab that texture (possibly the other Maps like normal). Copy and past them into a folder.

    3) Gather up all your textures, zip them, and upload them to a free dropbox. Send them the link.

Well, thank you. Managed to find all textures and send them via "wetransfer". 4 hours later i get the response that the files are being transmitted to the 3D Department for manufacturing... laugh

Will keep you informed and of course will show the final product... when it arrives...

For all that effort and money one can't simply buy a 3D scanner?

It's an honest question because I'm considering a scanner and would like to know.

There's also the paint issue, but even that seems doable lol

You're absolutely right. For me it's the lack of painting knowledge;-). I am planing a so called "Nook book". So our beloved Daz3d Studio combined with real life wink.

Maybe I will open a thread with the process... when I'm done to throw my money to Amazon for the immense Equipment that I need for this project LOL wink

The big selling point is their plug-in that closes [insert better word] the 3D geometry and makes the Daz Model one solid, printable object.

They use a (special?) type of plastic/resin that holds up better than the commerically available stuff.

At first, I only purchased the STL files and thought to have a friend print them out. Didn't work out.

And then, I met someone who was at university and taking a 3D print course and was going to use the school's equipment to print them out and that also had problems.

Somehow, they said it wasn't possible without a really good 3D printer.

So apparently, they got a big (size? or quality) 3D printer. I'm assuming. I don't know THAT much about this.

In the beginning the hand-painting was all the rage. Where, they had real artists hand-paint all the figures. The new technology is a system where the printer paints on the model.

So that's why the prices dropped and they started offering new sizes of figures.

I ordered a bunch of different sizes, and to be expected, the larger the fiigure, the better they look, overall.

I did some blogs about the whole experience.

Thanks for the links to the blogs, your characters look great.

I had a handful of my characters printed and primed, but not painted and was very happy.

I then picked up a 3D printer and have had a hundred or more of my figures converted to STLs and have been very, very happy with the results. I haven't had any done for a while now, but I will probably be going at it again in the next month or two. Hopefully their STL creation still works as well as it did the last times I tried it.
