Unlink Geometry Shell from Surfaces?

Hello, I am trying to create a geometry shell for fantom occlusion, I can create the shell, but the surface properties seem to be linked(if I turn the geometry shell opacity to 0, the hair does as well, how can I get around that? I get great results with just putting two copies of the hair into the scene, but it makes it harder because you have to adjust them one by one for morphs, thanks in advance!

Are you sure it's a shell and not an instance?
Positive, I click create geometric shell right?
Ok the problem comes in once I apply the uber shader, thats weird.
Ok I figured it out, you have to apply the shader before you create the shell.
