Heads Up | Mixer 2021 beta from Quixel/Epic is available

I have not used Mixer so far but thought it might be interesting to let those who missed the older posts know it exists.
It is similar to Substance or 3DCoat with respect to 3d painting - but free.
The 2021 beta supports UDIMS.
It includes a huge library of smart materials.
Note 1.
It seems one has to download the premade smart materials at installation time. There is no function to load, import etc. the materials later after installing the software (in a post they wrote it might come in a future release). I checked the download size in the installer window: Nearly 40 GB with all samples and material packs. One can deselect individual packs but there seems to be no hint which pack includes which materials. The app alone is only about 250 MB.
Note 2.
When starting the software one need to sign in once to either a Quixel or Epic account. But the accounts can be created free of charge.
Note 3 (found after first start).
The Windows DPI scaling is not implemented in a way users would need it (I assume caused by the same QT framework issues as in DAZ Studio, Substance and most other QT based apps). So, the usual UI size issues welcome us again.

Interesting - thanks for posting about that.
Could you please post some example made with Mixer and applied to Daz 3D items. Thanks.
Well, I can't speak for any DAZ items, but I've been learning Quixel for about a month now to texture the models I make in Blender; I made the chair and his gun/suppressor all of which I textured using Quixel.
This is just a very quick one. Just a build in texture set with some fiddling (not checked what can be done about the obvious texture tiling). In general Mixer works for DAZ.
EDIT:
Took me about two hours from using Mixer the first time to hitting render in DS. I think when somebody knows painting apps in general then Mixer will not be to different.
This is a still from a film I'm doing right now that I used Mixer for. It's the only thing I have sitting available, if you want to see some examples of textures on buildings and such, later today I can go into my scene files and pull some more stills.
I've been using Quixel Megascans with Mixer with Daz for well over a year now and it's to the point where pretty much unless it's Stonemason, I retexture everything I use with Quixel because the quality is unmatched. And you don't even need Mixer, Quixel has anything you need already setup, but Mixer helps if you want to take two Quixel assets and mix them or customize them more. But you go in, do your thing, export all the files and plug and chug in the surface tab, super easy.
Here's the thing though, you're free to use Quixel Megascans for free with UnReal, but you have to pay a monthly fee if you're going to use it in other programs. I pay I think 20 bucks a month and you get X amount of points and they roll over if you don't use them. I've amassed a nice little nest egg the past few months since I had built all my sets for my previous film back in like November and now that I've started my next film, I know I'm going to blow through them really fast retexturing all the new sets. They also have assets like rock formations and other things that look so good in Daz. I personally think the pricetag is worth it, it just depends on how much you retexture.
So you can't use the program to customise Daz models, unless you pay? I only want to add some leopard spots to G8F. Meh... I'll stick with Blender.
Pay? Pay for what exactly? Quixel Mixer is 100% free. As are all the premade mixes that you can download with the program. All you have to do is put in the learning time.
Mixer is free but Quixel Megascans assets are free only for UnReal use. If you google quixel megascans subscription it says on the page, "If you have an Unreal license, just sign in with your Epic Games account and get unlimited access to the Megascans library." And further down, "Megascans access under the UnReal engine end user license agreement is licensed for use only with UnReal Engine." I spoke with them via email about this last year, to use it in other programs you have to pay for a personal license.
Now if you're able to use assets that aren't from Quixel Megascans in Mixer, that I don't know, never tried because it's all integrated so perfectly together between Mixer and Bridge.
But you could still paint leopord spots on a figure in the program with out having to pay for anything? I don't see the problem, unless N_R Arts wants to resell said leopard print texture.
You can import your own custom materials and brushes like you can in Substance Painter.
It's a missed oppotunity to not called it Mixel.
Quixel Mixel is fun to say..
