Catalina 10.15.7/sec update killing dForce?

Damn, I did not upgrade to Big Sur to make sure I can still run studio. Now it seems that an automatic security update changed something with OpenCL and killed dForce. Out of the sudden whenever I try to start I simulation I get "Error initializing open CL Kernels".

Have Catalina 10.15.7 on a 2019 MacBook Pro with Security Update 2021-002 installed.

Anybody having the same issues. Any ideas? Is it possible to remove that security update or go back to 10.15.6? Seems other software was impacted as well. Not sure if DAZ will/can do an update to dForce with studio for Mac. Man, I hate this mess!

I can fully understand your frustration, but what one can do about it - not so much.

I have a problem on the new MacBook Pro with Apple M1 CPU at work. The program seems to work, but cannot save the data and communicate with Word.

The prices are so good for the new MacBooks, that's why so many people are buying them, but not for use with Daz Studio.

"not for use with Daz Studio" *

    * yet, middle of summer.  Note that the Big Sur problem is not with the M1 processor, since Intel Big Sur installations are also affected.

  • This is completely on DAZ.

Apple publically announced in July 2018 (and a year before that in the Apple Developers channel) that OpenCL and OpenGL would be deprecated in favor of Metal starting with 10.14 (Mojave). Developers could continue to use them as an interim measur e while they transitiont to Metal, but they would have to install the APIs and frameworks via their installers. And there's not guarantee that security updates or critical bug fixes won't break their functionaity.

You can revert to 10.15.6 using Time Machine or a bootable backup. If you don't have a backup you can reinstall the version of MacOS that came intalled on you MB Pro using Disk Utility then selectively upgrade to 10.15.6. If you're close to an Apple Store, they can revert it directly to 10.15.6, but it might cost you if your MB Pro is out of warranty.

  • Also, if you want/need the protection afforded by security updates and can live with the performance hit, you can run 10.15.6 or earlier in a VM. Personally, I prefer VMware Fusion to Parallels and VirtualBox.YMMV.

The problem is that not every developer likes Metal.

Well, whatever it was. The latest security update 2021-003 brought back CPU dForce on Catalina. Thank heavens. Bought a truckload of stuff during memorial day sale and quite a lot of dForce clothing is only usefull with dForce working.

Many words I do not understand. I thought Big Sur was a place in California people go to to get in trouble.

Still. I can do anything with dforce now. It crashes my system.
