Simon-3D has a free one.
You can find it in the Freestuff of Renderosity, just search for ''engine thrust''. :)
Which is here, http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/?item_id=72120 to give you more assistance finding it.
I would suggest http://www.daz3d.com/fire-and-smoke-for-daz-studio - a lot of utility for under $9
I would try making a Studio primitive sphere, and using a D-form to stretch it out to that shape. Then apply a 'Glow' effect to it.
A couple of rings (torus) may add to the effect as well.
similar to the light and candle effects discussed in Szark's Uber lights thread.
(F404 Pic from wikipedia)(A couple more from around the net. wall4all.me and kriensnet.ch)
Actually better than I was willing to pay for or take time to make! LOTS of morphs.. this is now my "go-to" for wash
How big is your model collection? Most of the similar stuff I have was originally included with one spaceship or aircraft r another.
Off hand, if you have the 'sci-fi melee weapons' pack which has been a freebie a time or two, you can take the beam glaive, make the staff bit transparent and you might have what you need.
The assault drone sold here has afterburners which are parentable but I believe they come in twos.
There is a free one listed on the Dystopia forums as well - http://team-dystopia.com/frm/index.php
Now, if you really want an advanced model of jet exhaust, you need shock diamonds in the stream. The SR-71's engine was famous for this:
