Spot Render Darker?

Generally I let my render go overnight for hours and then later rerender over the pieces I want. Lately I've had the issue that the spot renders come out less grainy than the full render - now I'm assuming this is because the full size render stopped after it hit a limit, where the spot renders are getting to 100% (well 100% of the settings 99% convergence technically). I've dealt with this and will blend it in Photoshop and sometimes only spot render the pieces that matter. Skin being less grainy matters, but the background may not. Now with this new render I have a completely different problem. The spot render came out way darker. It is part of a scene that is candle lit. Is this the same thing? As it renders it gets darker? That to me made no sense, but it is the exact same file, just the light from the candle is I guess actually not just darker but I would say has more contrast. Is that still just that it's rendering it clearer? I had it affect bloom as well in another render when I did spot renders the bloom almost disappeared. Thoughts?

Is it possible it's the convergence was actually changed? I did another piece and it didn't even match the last. Just now to check the settings for you I noticed it's at 95% convergence, not 99% like I set it for. I remember the program crashed during one of the spot renders and I had to start over. Apparently when I changed it to 99, I must not have saved it first, so part was rendered 95 and part at 99. At least I think...It should have been 99%, max time 250,000, and max samples 15,000. I'm going to set it to go again tonight and do just the side with the candle and see how it matches the last spot render.

I don't understand what the heck it does. It seems like how big the piece is dictates how much it changes. When I rendered the whole lit site of the picture separate it was lighter again, but I did a spot render over part of it and it's completely different, and this is with the same exact settings; I made sure this time.
