Performance and suggested build
Hello everyone,
I have recently started to use Iray within the last few months. Strangely within the last few weeks performance has just fallen off a cliff. Characters load fine but positioning some G8 actors takes an excrutiating long time. The movement lag is insane I fight for every inch and turn of the arm. I also crash quite often when attempting to render an Iray scene with more than one actor in it. I really did not have these issues when I began using Iray it seems to coincide with my upgrade to 4.15. Of course I am just guessing.
My guess is that my hardware is not beefy enough. I don't have the best or the worst GPU, I have a "good enough" card.
If you all had a dream rig which would give you stable Iray performance and reliable rendering without stuttering laggy performance during posing what would you get? No limits, just go crazy on your dream rig!
I have been told that DAZ cannot benefit from SLI but rather only a single GPU is this true?

Have you checked the driver for the GPU? Sometimes Windows will do an "update" to an older version. However, if your slow performance in geenral isn't using the Iray preview miode in the Viewport then that is unlikely to be the problem.
SLI is not used in Iray, but multiple cards can be - however they work separately, they don't pool memory to handle larger scenes.
Something that really confused me was that upgrading my CPU made a MASSIVE difference in render speeds and stability. I've also noticed that running Steam at the same time as rendering heavier scenes will cause a crash.
I've noticed that posing performance falls through the floor with certain items in the scene. I just got the Seok hair for genesis and it cripples the performance, litterally it takes seconds to pose one finger, so I don't add it in until I'm ready to render, same for most clothing.
No, it's not your computer. If you have a really terrible computer, like my poor old Intel Mac mini, you can see the problem much better. Daz has a delayed process mechanism for fitting. It's pretty neat, well, most of the time. You can see it running, there's a small yellow progress bar on the lower right when it fires off. Problem is, sometimes more than one item does this at once. One does a little, then another, but this in turn resets the progress of the first one, and it starts over again. It's an infinite loop. Yes, you can overpower this problem with better hardware. I wish there was a way to force "no updates", but it doesn't look like it. The best way, as one person said above, is to delay fitting some items to your character until the end. You can also save a character with their clothes unfitted, and this helps a bit except sometimes you hit another feature that a body shell will explode in your face if you fit clothes on top. You just have to remember the shell and the material you used so you can delete it and reinstance. You get used to it.
It manifestly is not an infinite loop - if it was hardware would be irrelevant. Nor is it a delayed fitting. It is almost certainly Smoothing Modifiers, possibly with collision detection, one one or more items; in geenral it's a good diea to turn those off while doing basic posing and only turn them back on at the end - I have a script to help with this https://www.dropbox.com/s/bwgw8ckbk46ysif/ToggleSmoothing.zip?dl=0
Thank you Richard! I'll look into this!
