What are your render settings, and in what format are you saving the render?

Window > Pane > Environment allows you to set the background color or image for the render, or to render as an alpha channel.

If you save your art in a .png format, the backgrund color will always be white in the Windows Picture Viewer, regardless if you used a backdrop or changed the viewport color. Using a different Picture Viewer the backdrop/color will be shown, depends on the software used. Same will be if you set your art as a wallpaper for your desktop. The thumbnail although will still be shown white. Seems to be more a problem of the standard picture viewer Windows is shipped with.

If you choose to save it in a .jpg format, the backdrop, if used, or a different viewport color chosen will be shown in the Windows Picture Viewer.
