Making Clothing Textures - PS vs PSP - other tools?

After making my first freebie, I've been making more items, and experimenting with UV maps.  Other than generic base colors, I'd like to start to create my own textures and generate clothing patterns(different stripes, paisleys, plaids, ginghams, etc), and not solely rely upon merchant resource packs.  I had used both PS and PSP/Painter in the past.  I really don't want to go down the subscriptions route, and had seen some good things with the latest PSP suite of tools.  From a price-point, ($59.99) PSP looks great to me.  Looking at the promo page, https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/products/paintshop-pro/ultimate it looks like I have my bases covered, as it also includes Painter Essentials.  I don't do digital watercolor, impasto, or other simulated oil paintings, so I don't need the full version of Painter.  I also just bought Filter Forge.  What other tools should I look into?

Thanks,

-David

I make do with PSP5 that came on a CD on the front cover of PCPlus magazine in 2002(?). It's adequate for my needs, and I suspect the most recent version is considerably more capable.

One thing I cannot put up with is Gimp. Some people seem to like it, and it's free. You may find you get on with it. However, its deliberate decision to run contrary to Windows conventions, stupid names for functions/filters & knowing childish self-satisfied smirk when naming 'Script-Fu' and 'Python-Fu' get on my wick like no other program. It is my graphics package of last resort. I am usually in a bad mood by the time I start using it, and it rarely stays that good while using it.

I have never used PS. The latest Windows 10 version of MSPaint (Paint 3D) is a nice idea, catastrophically let down by its implementation. It takes a fast machine & slows it to the response of a 286. So, while I cannot suggest something positve, I can suggest some things to avoid...

    Regards,

    Richard.

GIMP is free and does most things phototshop can. I have both and use GIMP most of the time. PSP used to come loaded with bloatware and even malware, so i would stay away from it.

Krita is free and does a lot of things PS can. I also use PSP ver. 11 and have never had a problem with bloatware or malware. I do miss the animation shop by jasc though.
