What's the trick to getting hair to tuck away under headwear? It seems like my options are either having the hair clip through the headwear left and right or just have no hair attached, neither a desired option.

If you first select the actual hair and its geometry (as compared to the HEAD part of the figure, and the "hat") it should be fairly easy to temporarily "erase" bits of hair that are sticking out as you "touch" or swipe over them with the dragged Geometry Editor tool, in D|S.
