~Problem with Millawa 8 Head morph~ (SOLVED)
Hi there!
Came across a very strange issue with Millawa 8. For some reason her head morph just won't load. Her body is loading perfectly, but head morph don't. When i try to use slider the only thing that changes is her eyelashes.
Log file didn't give me anything interesting. Here:

Help, please?
SOLUTION: The problem is not with Millawa 8, but with HD Face Staples and Stitches for Genesis 8 Females (Product Sku: 80488). The culprit is "FSSF 04 Staples.dsf". For unknown reason his creator forgot to change "id" and "name" in the file. Here's the thing - it refers to FHMMillawa8, yet it's parented to FSSF S04 Staples. I have sent a ticket, so hopefully it will be fixed in the near future. QUICK FIX: you can just delete HD Face Staples and Stitches for Genesis 8 Females or just change "id" and "name". BIG THANKS TO PerttiA! He found it.
Comments
As you say, nothing interesting in the log. It appears that you are loading the character directly. Have you tried loading a base Genesis 8 Female and dialing in the character after? Full character, or separate head and body? Sometimes setting one part separately prevents it from following the character controller. If you slide the Milawa controller, do the head and body controllers follow? You can click "Currently Used" in the Parameters tab to narrow the list of displayed items after setting the character control, even a little bit.
Thanks for help, NorthOf45, but sadly, the result is the same - tried to load default G8 Female, experimented with sliders and in the end only her body morph works. Her head just stays in default mode :'(
UPD; Clothes on
Please put some clothes on the figure, or remove the textures, or just put the Viewport into Smooth Shaded drawstyle.
update - finally found the "source" of this pesky little problem in the log file.

I'm not quite sure what this means exactly. Like, DAZ can't find the right files? Or he search for it in the wrong place? I've downloaded Millawa through DIM and I didn't touch installed files for sure, didn't change install directory, so... yeah, can anybody explain what DAZ want from me?
Hey, sorry, lost track of this one. Have you tried re-installing the Millawa 8 package? Do any other characters behave this way?
There can be many warnings from add-on products that try to prepare for characters that you don't have, but when it is for a character that you definitely do have, it does indicate a problem. The "parent" in this case is Genesis 8 Female, so verify that the Node Name is actually Genesis8Female (Label Name should be Millawa 8). (You can see that in the Node tab in the Additional Info area at the bottom of the Scene tab). Verify that the metadata shown has the correct Scene ID (/data/ ... /Genesis8Female), Content Type (Actor/Character) and Compatibility Base (/Genesis 8/Female).
Thanks for trying to help me, NorthOf45!
Nope, only Millawa' head morph has failed me so far. Other characters works fine.
Have verified everything you said. Nothing abnormal here.
Scene ID is /data/DAZ%203D/Genesis%208/Female/Genesis8Female.dsf#Genesis8Female
Did you try re-installing?
If you want to look under the hood a bit, you can examine some of the parameters that are driven by the Millawa head control. Look for them in the control's Parameter Settings (the little gear in the upper right corner of the slider). There will be tabs with sub-components, controllers and keys (current values for the parameter if non-keyed, which most are). The sub-components and controllers can be examined in the Property Hierarchy tab. There will be many, but you can filter on key words to find a particular one and see if the values in there make sense. It gets a little technical, and I'm not 100% sure what to look for, but maybe you'll notice something out of the ordinary. You can also look in the Parameters tab in the hidden parameters to see if they are being driven properly. Something might be overwriting a critical value. Too bad there isn't a debugger to trace the execution.
Yeah, i re-installed her a couple of times with no changes at all :'(
Now to the interesting part - you're right, NorthOf45! Her one crucial sub-component is indeed missing. There are a lot of components for her expressions and face parts, but there's no head morph' component at all. I've attached the screen with info. But the question is, how can I patch this up since re-installing do exactly nothing?
"Could not find parent for modifier: FHMMillawa8."
There is something not correctly specified inside the morphfile
...and this is what I can't just understand. I downloaded Millawa 8 and installed her through DIM, all's good, no errors or bugs during installation or downloading. But since I don't see a lot of threads about Millawa 8 head morph bug, I can safely assume that the problem is on my end. Yet I can't understand how it's possible - every other character works as intended and only Millawa failed me. Is there something special about her morphs? Maybe there's some hidden required product I should buy? I mean, it's a really strange bug. I can't wrap my mind about it.
According to your screenshot, the Millawa Head control is missing most of the sub-components. You show 37 ERC [Multiply] parts, but there should be hundreds (!) of ERC [Add] components, the ones that actually change the shape of the mesh. This is probably due to the missing parent when trying to set up. The problem could be related to some other product that you have installed that is interfering.
Uninstalling everything and re-installing to see which one is a tedious process. Maybe try this: what we will do is create a new library with only Genesis 8 Starter Essentials and Millawa 8 and see if she works properly with nothing else. In your file system, create a temporary new Library location where you will install those two products alone, with maybe the basic resources. You can actually create a new dummy account in DIM with different locations for all used folders so that you don't mess up the original.
So, make a new download folder where you would copy the needed files to install to the new library. You don't want to use the original download folder, as that might mess up the product status. Copy the zips to the new folder and in DIM you should see only the files you copied. Install to the new temporary library. In Studio, go to the Content Directory Manager and create a new Content Set that uses only the new temporary library folder for the DAZ Studio content. Switch to that Content Set and Studio should only see those installed products. Now try Millawa to see if she loads up properly. If so, then the probelm isn't with Millawa 8 installation itself.
Ok, finally at home...
The error tells that the head morph cannot find the "parent" as it is specified inside the morph file.
This is the relevant section of FHMVictoria8.dsf, what is written inside FHMMillava8.dsf should be the same exept with the "id" and "name" referring to Millawa8 (Note that every character/dot/point/etc. counts);
"modifier_library" : [
{
"id" : "FHMVictoria8",
"name" : "FHMVictoria8",
"parent" : "/data/DAZ%203D/Genesis%208/Female/Genesis8Female.dsf#geometry",
If this information is correct inside the file, you may have the morph installed twice in different locations, but that would show in the log.
Installing whatever characters and/or morphs does not report any problems of this type, they will only surface when you are trying to load any figure that uses the same base figure (Genesis 8 Female in this case)
Hmmm... This is what my FHMMillawa8.dsf file says:
},
"modifier_library" : [
{
"id" : "FHMMillawa8",
"name" : "FHMMillawa8",
"parent" : "/data/DAZ%203D/Genesis%208/Female/Genesis8Female.dsf#Genesis8Female",
This part is different, it doesn't reffer to geometry like with Victoria 8, so... should I changed it to #geometry? (i'm kinda scared though!)
P.S. Thanks, NorthOf45, I'll try to reinstall everything but only when I'm out of options :)
Make a copy of the original FHMMIllawa8.dsf and change the name to FHMMillawa8_dsf.old to have a backup copy of the original.
Change the "parent" to "/data/DAZ%203D/Genesis%208/Female/Genesis8Female.dsf#geometry" inside the remaining FHMMillawa8.dsf and save, you can not break anything.
Send a ticket about the problem and fix so that DAZ is aware of it.
That's what mine has ( "parent" : "/data/DAZ%203D/Genesis%208/Female/Genesis8Female.dsf#Genesis8Female"), so that's not the source of the problem.
And, @PerttiA, my Victoria 8 "FHMVictoria8.dsf" does not have "#Geometry", it has "#Genesis8Female", too.
@avatar0319, I suggest to only install Millawa 8 and Genesis 8 Starter Essentials in a separate library, isolated from everything else, not to re-install everything.
One thing comes to mind... Does the complete path of your installation location include "\Cloud\" in it?
I'm using manual downloading and installation, but even the contents of the files may be different if installed with DAZ Connect ("Smart" Content) to the non-traditional "Cloud" path.
All DIM, all the time...
Sadly, it didn't help. Changing it to #geometry did nothing. problem still persist :'(
I had sent a ticket like a week ago, still no answer and, honestly, tech support won't really help me if the problem is indeed in my library. I'll try tommorow what NorthOf45 suggested. Thanks, guys, I appreciate your help!
Come to think of it... The log says it failed to prepare modifier for FHMMillawa8 and yet you get the dial for it = It is loading something named FHMMillawa8...
If you start with fresh DS (empty scene) and load the "Genesis 8 Female Dev Load.duf" (from ...\People\Genesis 8 Female\Developer Kit\)
Select "Currently Used", which dials have non-zero value?
If you see just the dials for the lashes with non-zero value, select "all" to show all the dials and filter for "Millawa"
Use the gogwheel to get into the "Parameter Settings" of the headmorph and chance the "Color B" from pure white to something else and close the dialoque
Now go to Edit->Save As->Support Asset->Save Modified Assets, and before DS makes any changes, it shows a list of morph files it is going to change and asks for confirmation - Which files are listed?
You can close the dialoque without confirming, so no changes are actually made. We are only interested in that list of morph files.
First of all, thanks again for helping me! Second, I installed DAZ 3D on my laptop and tried Millawa 8 there - yeah, she's working alright. On my main PC - not so much :D
Now, i tried what PerttiA said - here's the result... I assume the culprit here is...eyelashes? What should i do though? just delete them?
I wonder what the "FSSF 04 Staples" is doing there, have a look inside the file.
DS has two ways to set the "parent" for an asset file, first is the "parent" line in the DSF file, second is in the DUF character preset.
The one in the DSF is the one DS uses when it's loading the figure, the one in the DUF is shortened and part of the modifier call, and I think it's meant to be a "backup".
Problem is that when the "parent" in the DSF fails DS doesn't load that asset in with the figure, the modifier call in the DUF then tries to load it, with the end result being a partially working dial in DS.
Inspected FSSF 04 Staples - everything looks alright. Tested it on laptop with Millawa 8 - working alright as well.
This makes me a sad panda :( Basically it means there's just no way to find out why DAZ don't want to find parent for FHMMillawa8 without deleting everything and re-installing?
No need to uninstall everything. On the laptop, try adding Genesis 8 Figures or packages with morphs until Millawa 8 breaks. Install a few, reload Millawa 8 to see if everything still works. Hopefully you can track down the culprit before too long.
Have you checked what is written inside the file "FSSF 04 Staples"?
PerttiA was right. The culprit is... indeed "FSSF 04 Staples.dsf" from "HD Face Staples and Stitches for Genesis 8 Females"... For unknown reason his creator forget to change "id" and "name" in the file. Here's the thing - it refers to FHMMillawa8, yet it's parented to FSSF S04 Staples. Big thanks for help to PerttiA and everytone who tried to make my Millawa 8 working as it should be! I'll edit first post with the solution, so if anyone will ever have this problem he'll know what to do.
Wow, that's pretty obscure, and well-hidden. You are apparently the only user in the forums who has both of those products installed, or at least noticed the problem and spoke up.
Hi, I was made aware of this thread (thanks @vwrangler) and I've checked the file in question from our Face Stitches and Staples with @Esid. Everything works as it should on our end. We downloaded and installed it through DIM and we checked the file via an editor as well. The lines that are causing problems on your end do not appear on our product at all. I think that in your effort to solve the problem, the files installed in your library may have been corrupted. As, per your post, you're getting: "Modifier/Shape/Generated" as the type, which is not what our file says.
@Esid will be adding to this response shortly (his response needs to be approved as he rarely if ever posts, lol).
But I suggest that you wipe the product from your system and make a fresh install of it and see if the problem persists.
For context and comparison, here is the snippet you showed as per the original file:
I just downloaded a fresh install of the product in quesiton to check this problem. It's really weird, because I myself don't have any figure installed at any given time unless I'm making a morph specifically for that figure.
What I'm seeing on that file (FSSF S04 Staples.dsf) is as follows:
I would recommend to delete the product and re-download it to doubt check that it wasn't corrupted, somehow, by mistake. Just in case, how did you download the file before? I got mine through DIM.
Thank you for the answer, FenixPhoenix! But this is where it gets really weird. I just deleted, downloaded and re-installed HD Face Staples and Stitches for Genesis 8 Females with DIM - Millawa head morph still not working properly. Then I decided to download it right from my product library - got the .zip file, unpacked it and just looked at FSSF S04 without installing it. And yep, FHMMillawa8 is still there. I don't know what to think of it. One thing for sure - with HD Face Staples and Stitches installed I can't use Millawa head morph :'(
