Prop Rigging: What am I doing incorrectly?

I followed (and adapted) this tutorial by RGCincy on prop rigging, applying it to a twisted rope model.  I can get the start and end bones to deform correctly, but transforming any other bone will distort my mesh.

I think my problem is either at the geometry level (e.g. a complex mesh) or how I have set up my weight mapping, but I am not sure how to correct it.

Any assistance would be welcome!

Maybe try using the Joint Editor to get the bones aligned properly.

Looks like a weight-mapping issue to me.

Thanks, I decided to to go with another product that was already pre-rigged.
