Best Lighting to Enhance Skin Textures?

What, in your opinions, is the lighting best suited specifically for character skins?

I was working with a G8M character using Trajan (isourcetextures) shader settings, the Ruins.hdr and a rim light setup (spotlights). Then on a whim I switched Iray settings to Sky/Sun only -- and the difference was remarkable. Aside from the expected change in shading, the character skin itself seemed so much more richer. As far as good renders go, then,  apparently being "well lit" sometimes isn't nearly enough. My hdr/rim light rig was throwing more light on the character than the sun/sky at defaults, yet the latter was producing more vivid results.

I know spectral lighting has its proponents on these boards but that, as many of you know, comes with the drawback of UV seam errors that don't seem to crop up when using other types of lighting. Other ideas?

I am a huge fan of Dimension Theory's Pro Studio HDR products.

  • Excellent advice, thanks. I've been testing against several of Dimension Theory's HDRIs and the lighting is superb.  I'm also getting terrific results from Dreamlight's Studio Light Pro HDRI Iray Wow Lights. (I'd purchased them previously but forgot to download them.)
