Cannot select bones of rigged item

Usually, with a rigged wardrobe item figure, you are able to select the facegroups associated with a bone and then you can pose that part of the figure.

But I have created a figure asset, see pictures attached, which when selected with any of the posing tools (e.g., translate, rotate, active pose tool) it selects only the whole asset rather than face groups/bones

Is there some setting that can rectify this?

I realise I could easily work around this by posing the figure in other ways, but  would rather fix it.

    You need those polygons assigned to a group, then in the Tool Settings pane with the Joint Editor active and the bone selected you make that group the bone's Selection Group (top-right of the pane).

    Ah okay, thanks - i was looking in that tab but couldnt figure out how to change the face groups.   (I just had to select the bone first)
