I'm pointing a DIstant light at the shoes and have a ball in fron of the shoes but nothing is reflected. Anyway to reflect things?
i'm rendering with the basic 3DDelight.

What are your material settings? You need reflection Strength to be non-zero, and no map for Reflection Colour, to get reflections. Also, a black ball isn't a good test as the empty environment will also reflect as black - for interesting reflections you really need a full scene, or a sky dome, around the figure - the side being reflected needs to be lit, a single distant light is unlikely to work.

In your second image the ball is reflecting because there are lit surfaces of the figure for it to reflect.
