The first image in the Daz Studio view port

The Second image is the Rendered image of the first.

I obviously hit something but what do I do to fix it?

next to the drop down menu where you set your view port view ( default camera, perspective view,,etc,,etc,) is a small globe,,click it and you should be able to fix it from there. I think smooth textured maybe the one you are looking for.

That would work if the draw style was wrong, but it isn't - the hair looks textured. I think there is a reflection map applied to the skin, or possibly a bright specular colour with low glossiness, at a very low strength so it doesn't show strongly in the render but the preview is showing it at full strength.

ok,,after much fiddling around, I've been able to reproduce this. This is the "Tori for V5" character that came with the Carrara 8.5 Pro bundle. No settings need to be changed, she loads in the viewport looking just like the screen shot (sans clothing of course ). The other ladies, and the gents, from the bundle seem to show up in the viewport without that silvery effect to the skin. I had a look at the surfaces tab and just as Richard had suspected, the reflection strength was at 100%. I set mine to 0% and that removed the silvery effect. I honestly don't know why it's like that, maybe Richard or someone with more experience can help with that.

Skin is slightly reflective - there is, if you look, a dark map applied to the reflection colour which tones the effect down to a realistic level in renders. Several of the Elite textures also have a reflection, though I don't think it'ss et up in the same way.
