Hello, what do you think would currently be the best configuration to make short animations (5 minutes) with Iray without having a render time of 10 hours per pipeline.

Thankssmiley

Might depend on your specs to start. What kind of hardware are you working with?

A five minute animation at 25/30fps is 7500/9000 frames, if one frame takes a minute to render, one is facing about 125/150 hours total for rendering (5 to 6 days).

What are you animating, ie. what is in your scene?

It depends on your scene and basically if you have enough video memory. Besides that as long as you can load the scene the hardware isn't going to make that much difference for rendering it. I would probably want a ssd drive a good multicore i5 or better and nvidia rtx card and 16 or more system ram and maybe a second video card so I could use the computer for something else for the next week.

I manage to do them faster cheeky but it takes a lot of compromises and short cuts

if your camera is static or you only rotate it on the 3 axis you can render a spherical exr of your scene minus the characters first to put in the environment dome.

do a small one for lighting and a big one to render out a matching background image series if rotating the camera.

render your actors with the small lighting one, draw dome off and a png series.

You don't need 100% convergence just enough iterations to not get noise less than 100 often sufficient

Combine in Hitfilm express or your video ediitor of choice ( I often use Blender too)

for my pc config I have an integrated graphics chipset on my asus rog STRIX Z390-F GAMING motherboard ,I have an Intel Core i5 8500 processor and 16 gb of ddr4 in 3200.

  • I haven't edited any scenes yet it was really for informational purposes because I find the rendering a bit long for the static images. Thank you very much for your advice and for the little tips (Wendy)
