Any ideas why this black rectangular artifact appears?

Sometimes when I render (DS 4.15.0.2), I see these unexpected black (or dark) rectangular artifacts. Another image rendered just before this one at similar angle did not have the black plane. I've not been able to find any 'object' at that location. I have seen this in other renders as well. Usually, I just adjust the view to not see it, but better to know what causes it. Lights are common - 1 distant and 2 spot lights. Lights are default Dome and Scene.

That's a light with rectangular geometry. In Iray, lights are physical objects in your scene, like a movie set or a photography studio.

If you want to hide it, disable "Render Emitter".

Even if it's hidden, it still behaves as if it's part of the world. You'll get a lot of ugly shading where it intersects with the ceiling, so I'd also recommend shrinking it and moving it down.

Ah, many thanks! That was the perfect answer. Turning a light visibilty off cleared it.

The only confusing difference between Poser & DS is the lighting, and I'm still dealing with it. DS seems to have too many different forms of lighting, which have weird interferences.

Barring some legacy 3Delight lights, Daz/Iray only has four lights and they all have a specific purpose: point lights, which cast light in all directions; spot lights, which cast light in one direction; directional lights, which cast infinite light from one direction like the sun; and emissive lights, which are glowing textures on a model. Practically, directional lights are fairly useless since HDRIs/Sun-Sky can do the exact same thing, so that's only three types you really need to worry about.

You are using a product like BOSS Portrait and Promo Studio Lighting perhaps?
