Content organization

I'd like to impose some rational order over my runtime but I'm not sure how much I can do without breaking something.

For example there are assets that are definitely places but they live under Props. I'd like to move them to Environments. There are other issues like misspelled folder names and texture sets not being with the item they were made for. In Props I'd like to make folders such as Weapons then have Future, Modern, and Ancient. Also would like to do something similar with Vehicles.

So, how much customization can I do? Do I need to do anything special to Daz Studio after I make the changes? FWIW, I typically manually install and I never use "Smart Content".

Would it be a good approach to do this in a new, clean runtime (installing everything fresh) or better to move folders in the existing runtime?

Also, is there any way to make all of my shaders appear in the list in the Surfaces pane?

Any guidance would be wonderful!

The best way to organise content is through Categories, that way it is nondestructive. You could move the files, but if you move a file and it is used in a saved scene, daz will not be able to find it at the old location if you want to open the old scene.

What you want is pretty much "Smart Content" with some organising. You would try get Daz studio to reimport metadata to get smart content working.

You will have to manually assign categories to each item. Go to the content library pane, right-click on Categories and create sub-categories. Then, go to each item and right-click on an item and select Categorize.

You can actually move presets to wherever you want. The only two folders you should never move or reorganized are "Runtime" and "Data". Everything else you should be able to move without breaking anything.

Yup, aside from data and runtime you can move everything. You can make an extra "tester" library, install the items there and put the files in whatever folders you prefer, check if it works properly and move it to your main library if everything is fine. I'm using it mostly for freebies, since they often require fixes.

Use the Content Library pane to safely move files.
