Craig Tough Guy Hair stuck with one hair color?

vonHobovonHobo Posts: 1,706

I purchased this product, and apparently the hair colors will not work. So you are stuck with the default grey shade?

Not that I don't like grey, but the product is pretty useless if you cannot change the hair color.

If no one has a solution to this I will have to return it. But it's a unique hair product so I really hate to return.

I get this message in the log file when I apply *any* of the Iray materials to the hair...

2021-08-04 01:12:34.875 Invalid hierarchy for selected node(s) and "preset_hierarchical_material" type; no root(s) found.

Try selecting the character instead of the hair before you apply.

Well, it was worth a try, but it gives the same error.

    Thank you.

Is your character G8 or G8.1? Hierarchical materials made for G8.1 don't work on G8.

Product page says compatible with both 8 and 8.1.

  • vonHobovonHobo Posts: 1,706

It is a G8 character. Product says it works with G8 and G8.1.

I don't use G8.1 characters. So I would not have purchased it if said it doesn't work on G8.

They need to sort out this mess on the product pages where many items say compantible with G8 and they are not.

     Returning for a refund!

You could also try with a 3rd party shader, here's another Neftis hair using OOT IrayPair shader, it works for both hair, eyebrows and beard, and renders faster.  You need to use a slighly darker shader for the scalp, for bright hairs.

First render here is with the original Neftis shader, second the OOT shader.

Here's another with Vyktohria's "To Dye For Universal Iray Shader":

Hey - it looks like a bug, but you can get a round it by loading the hair on the base 8.1, changing the colour, and, with the hair selected, "Save as Material Preset'. Then the material will be available under the 'Saved' part of the materials tab for next time you load a GM8 figure....

Hang on, I suck at explaining stuff. I'll grab some screen shots.

We should log a ticket tho.

You can use these steps to fix when the 8.1 colours/morphs don't properly apply to 8 a lot of the time

^ Load the generic 8.1 Genesis figure. I know you want to use another figure, but we gotta re-save the materials first.

^ Apply the hair to this 8.1 figure. Add the material you want to save for 8 (you can repeat this and the next few steps for each colour you want available for 8)

^ File -> Save As - Material Preset

^Easiest to save it here. Give it an easy to understand file name, because the preview later won't be super easy to see.

    ^Defaults should be fine

^ You can now delete the 8.1 figure or set up a new scene. Load the Genesis 8 figure you want to use.

^Apply the 8.1 product. Select it in the scene Viewer. Then underneath in the Surfaces Tab, under Presets, click on the 'Saved Files' and the materials you saved out will be there and you can double click to apply

    Yeah!

Simalar process should work with shapes and stuff as well.

I haven't got this hair to look quite as nice as the promos yet. But I want to keep showing off Wolfgang, because I love him.

Had the same issue. There are two hairs a g8 and g81 hair. Make sure you use the correct one for the figure or the preset doesn't work.

Does not matter if the hierarcial material preset looks for G8.1 base.

I did notice two hairs, both say G8M. And neither one on a G8M was able to have the materials applied. Unless I did something wrong in that process, that does not work either.

I had the same problem with both thumbs in Smart Content, and both are labelled for G8M for me.

Thank you. I will try this.

    He looks great!

I see only one file for the hair (and one for the beard). In any event, the hierarchy is set in the preset not the hair itself so this does look as if an update is required. The product does list only 8.1 in the name so I suspect the compatibility is in error - I will report, but the fix may be tor emove Genesis 8 Male from the list of comaptible figures.

There is a beard in the Anatomy folder.

There is a hair in the Hair folder.

There is also a beard and a hair in the Materials folder.

So maybe there is only one of each, but they are duplicated in several folders? Very confusing. I don't think the presentation of this product was well thought out.

I used the ColorWerks Hair Shaders for Iray to change the color on this product, and it looks like dynamite!

Genesis 8.1 Male with the hair from the Genesis 8.1 Male folder. Hierarchal red hair preset applied. Studio 4.15

The hair is for G8.1 Male only and the hierarchal colors do not work on G8 male.

Sorry, I am incorrect. You must use G8.1 male with this product. The colors will not work, on G8 male.

I'n afraid that was the fix - if you purchased on the strength of the Genesis 8 Male compatibility listing and don't want to use the methods above to make it work on 8 then you can of course request a refund.

Thank you for looking into this Richard. It's a really nice hair product and I managed to get it to work with G8 using the ColorWerks Hair Shaders.

So apart from the inconvenience of the materials with G8, it's a really nice product.
