Is Samsung Sam a Genesis-based character?

So for those who are unaware, Samsung Sam is the unofficial Samsung mascott that was never officially released by Samsung, but got leaked from an external studio and became very internet popular in the last few months.
https://www.virtualhumans.org/article/who-is-samsung-sam

Everyone keeps comparing it to a Pixar model, but like previous famous Digital Models it looks extremely Dazzie to me. I know that her clothes and hair are custom made by the external studio and likely some rerigging was done, but the core model seems extremely like a customized Genesis 3/8 to me. I think I recognize the morphs, I forgot the correct names but 3D Universe for example a few toons like this.

Anyway, what are your opinions and what morph mix do you think was used?

If she was intended to be a trademark character than no.

She's a good-looking character. The expressiveness, the exaggerated expressions on the face? They don't feel like a standard Genesis setup.

If I had to do that figure in Genesis? I'd probably start from Sakura 8 (Rarestone's figure, I think)... one of the better values in Genesis 8 figures even if you don't like anime. I'd probably do it in 8.1 for the facial rig, though. 3du's cartoon morphs aren't a bad choice, either.

If Samsung Sam was a real product, I'd switch to Samsung.

    *ahem*

    You know it will happen.

    LMAO X'D

She reminds me of the Genesis Aikos.

I very much doubt it, for many reasons such as extra costs and licensing.. There are some very talented 3D modellers out there, who can do amazing things..

I think the mouth was rerigged, but the rest of it just seems exactly like the Genesis sizes, bones, UV, shaders, etc. Like I could make this figure in a day from G8 (with Rarestones morphs, good example) and you'd see no difference from the original, which is unlike 99,9% of custom 3D designs which have at least some unique bits and bops I can't imitate with Genesis. I dunno, still have my doubts.

I don't see much coincidence in humanoid rigs from different studios being similar, given how they all are made to animate similar humanoids.

You will also discover head topologies being very similar across the industry.

It works the opposite way. Daz artists making stylized models are inspired by popculture around them. Daz also adheres to industry standards, like loops on morphing geometry placed where you'd expect them.

I love the character look, but she was only a proposed and rejected character made in a cookie-cutter Pixar-meets-anime style. I'm sure I could get pretty close using one of the Crocodile Liu characters mixed with toon Generations.

BTW, Genesis bases are used in the industry, so they could be starting with one.

More likely it was sculpted in Zbrush by a Zebra... The CGI Studios and Advertising Agencies have been hiring more retired zoo animals for CGI work lately... htttps//wwww.fictitiouscginews/articles/645328/retired-zoo-animals-replace-human-artists

Zebra is slang for Zbrush, yes.

So... sculpted in Zebra by Zbrush  yes

Not even Zbrush. She was created in Blender. She is absolutely not a Daz Genesis character. It would be crazy for a mega corporation like Samsung to use a premade made model as their spokesperson. Rather, there is an entire team of artists creating this character so that Samsung 100% owns it. This link even names some of the team behind her, who work for a company called Lightfarm.

    https://www.androidheadlines.com/2021/06/samsung-new-virtual-assistant-sam.html

Of note Lightfarm lists the software they used. They used software like Adobe After Effects, SideFX Houdini, Adobe Photoshop, Marvelous Designer, and Blender 3D.

I'm quite impressed with this one. Samsung Sam can't be ripped from any game assets so it's all done by eyeballing. Good work, imo.

I own a few cartoonish IP character packs for mixmatching assets, but otherwise known IP characters used as-is are safe only in fanarts. Woe to anyone selling anything basing on existing franchises if IP holders come brandishing the cease-and-desist hammer.

Trademarks must be defended by their holders or they are going away.

For the time being Blizzard is having problems bigger than defending their trademarks, but Star Wars now are Disney IP.

All of this is rolling the dice about how litigious the IP owners are.

Just having a go at Sam.  She's new to me, but I like her!

My guess is that Sam is a marketing test. The companies involved have ties to Samsung, and it would be kind of crazy to just make a Samsung mascot girl for no reason. After all, they could have simply removed the Samsung logo on her shirt. It is curious that the Lightfarm page has been taken down though. That could indicate Samsung asked them, um, very politely to pull the page. But again, if Lightfarm without being contracted by Samsung, they would have known that Samsung would tell them to take it down. These are professionals, and they should be well aware of the boundaries of copyrights. It does not really serve Lightfarm a purpose. It might get them some attention, but if this is all unofficial, is really good attention? I don't find anything particularly special about Sam, either. She is cute, I suppose, but she is just wearing very basic clothes with normal hair. After all, pretty 3D girls are everywhere, just look the Daz store page, LOL. Her expressions are nice, and do set her apart from most 3D characters you see. I think her expressions are what are attracting people the most.

So I think this was all a marketing gimmick. If it does anything, they might use Sam as a mascot in some Samsung ads from time to time. That would make sense, these ads would instantly stand out from other ads with real people. Her appearance could also have wide appeal, as she looks like a character who could be in the wildly popular Fortnite, other videos games, or a Pixar movie.

This whole thing certainly gave Samsung some easy press coverage and social media hits. That alone would be worth this project for them, that is exactly why they would do something like this.

That's a pretty good attempt at her, Gogger!

Thanks! To be clear though, she is a model I bought elsewhere (starts with R and ends with Hub) and rendered in DAZ Studio, post processed with Photoshop and Luminar.

I'll still say it's impressive, considering there aren't any ripped 3d assets to speed up the work.

If Samsung or aynone else ever was in doubt if the potential new mascot would work well... The hype says "yes".

Poor "mascot" is gonna' be "Rule 34'd" every which way from Sunday.  Not necessarily by members here, just the online community at large.  I mean, anybody remember "Erin" from the E-Surance commercials before AllState bought the company?

BTW, Google says she's already 34'd do the hell and back. No Daz model necessary.

Poor phrasing on my part.  I should have used past tense.

I swear sometimes the "Rule 34" content seems to appear online before the source material, whatever the source material may be.
