Installing Non Daz files from other sites

I use to do Poser, Bryce, and C4d like 10 yrs ago or more. I never fooled with Studio really. Opened and closed a couple times. lol.. I had Poser so I really didn't bother learning something new.

So here I set many yrs later. My oldest daughter is interested in 3d now so I thought I'd give it another go. So the first thing I did was download some previous purchases from Renderosity and some new freebies. I had no clue how to put it in my scene so I brought it in via merge... (an outfit for my G 8 female I had in the scene already.  Well obviously it didn't work. I tried a few things but nah.

My daughter says get install manager. So I did. I open it and the first thing I read is that it won't recognize anything it hasn't downloaded even if I put it in the same location as the other downloads.

So now I'm at a loss.

Any advice appreciated!

Thank you!

It isn't that Install manager won't recognise things it hasn't downloaded, it's that Install Manager requires the zip to follow a particular structure and have an XML manifest file to describe the contents. There are zips that meet those requirements as freebies and from other stores, but they aren't the rule.

If you open the zip and dig down through its folders you should usually hit a Runtime folder and/or a Data folder, usually plus others - assuming you are on Windows, drag those (the Data, the Runtiem, and anything else that sits alongside them) into your content directory (e.g. Documents/Daz 3d/Studio/My Library/), let Windows merge them with the existing folders of those names, and the files should then be available in the Content Library (they won't appear in Smart content unless they have daz Studio metadata and you import it, and some things - such as morphs - may not have user-facing files at all but may instead add properties to a figure).

  • Ok. I searched and Daz only saw 2 files so I went in and tried to install one of them. It didn't work. So I investigated what you said. Attached is a screenshot . There is absolutely nothing showing in my library there or in the Daz Studio file in my programs either.

    Thanks

What pack is it your trying to install? SKU# if a Daz pack? Chances are if it's a Rendo pack you won't be able to install it with DIM or any other installer. You would have to install it manually. Are the any folders inside My Daz Connect Library?

"My Daz Connect library" is only for content installed with Connect. If that's where you installed those files manually then it's normal DS won't see them.

Content installed manually or with DIM should go in another folder.

I always use a dedicated folder for my "3rd party" material and then add that to the Daz content directory manager (press 'f2' to open your preferences, open the 'content' tab and then click "content directory manager" at the bottom).

Of course the possible downside is that you'll need the "Content library" pane in order to access this material, but so far it's been my experience that using DS without that pane is impossible either way (there are still plenty of packages available which do not provide full "smart content support" or which bug out with the use of categories (and then end up in "Lost + Found").

But yeah, any folder can basically do.
