how to "smart prop" an object?

Hi,

well, everything is (almost) in the title but let me be more specific about my needs and some specific examples.
I need several weapons. (heroic fantasy oriented: stafs, axes, swords etc..)
I need several characters. (V4 V5 V6 etc...)

some items are not proped at all
some items are proped only for one char/one hand/one orientation etc...

I need my items proped to all my chars
I need them proped in the way I want it. Example: the sword with the blade ahead AND the sword with the blade backward (reverse). (2 separate prop of course)

I know, that I have to do all this job manually :-( .....and that's all I know because I am a beginner ;-)

the question is: how to do it? can I do it in daz3d (or poser?) ? Do I need an external software? Is there a tutorial somewhere?
