Bad first impression (and how to fix it)

Hi, I just downloaded DAZ Studio minutes ago and it left a bad first impression on me.

  1. It installed itself in the root folder on the C: drive without asking. I wanted it to install to a different drive. DazCentral asked me where I wanted to install but Studio did not. I have since managed to uninstall it, change the 'base path location' and re-install it. Now it is on the right drive.
  2. On first start, it launched on the wrong screen. That is, not the screen, on which DazCentral is running, from which I launch Studio. Even now, the welcome popup window still pops up on the wrong screen.
  3. All the UI elements and everything expect the menu bar was missing. I was literally staring at an empty window. This happens to others to. I found the fix on the forums. windows \ workspace \ select sayout \ choose a layout
  4. The forums page didn't load when I opened first the page. All I got was an error 502 from Cloudflare that said that the host www.daz3d.com had an error.

so, yes, even though I just started with this software. Lots of room for improvemet, I'd say.

Central should let you set the base path before installing.

Daz Studio and Central do not share settings, as far as I know DS uses the primary display on first launch.

That doesn't usually happen on first install, and the location of the configuration files is not in the Central install folder 9they go in AppData) so I'm not sure why you would have had this additional issue

Sadly Cloudflare time-outs like this are quite frequent, I agree that it is annoying.

    Edit fix indecipherable typo

Daz runs on an old (circa 2005) version of Qt, which I suspect is why the interface is full of jank. They're in the process of upgrading it to Daz Studio 5. Hopefully it'll run smoother.

DazCentral was designed to be "baby's first installer". If you want more control, use Daz Install Manager instead.

Your typos are usually pretty easy to decipher, but this one stumped me. Thanks for the clarification. I'm sure it will help people understand your intent.

Thank you for the tip with Daz Install Manager. I'll give it a try!

As for the screen, it launches on the secondary screen. I don't know why, because I start it from the primary screen and Central is running on the primary. Now it will start on the primary screen as expected but the pop ups are still on the secondary screen (like the rendering pop up).

edit: I tried to install it on a second system (also 2 monitors) but this time with install manager. This time, I didn't have any of the issues that I had the first time with central. Perhaps the issues came from central not from studio? This time, I could choose the install location before studio installed and it opened on the main screen. There also was no issue with the layout (blank screen). Looks like install manager is the way to go. Additionally, I could preselect assets that I then didn't need to download from within studio. Like the genesis assets.

  • Just my two cents on the "Opening on the wrong screen".

Open ds, move it to the correct screen and close it out.

It, should, open on the correct screen after that.

Same goes for the render pop out as well.

This isn't, specifically, a DS problem, it's a windows problem.

I run into this with all sorts of software on multi-monitor rigs.

So much fun when Battletech decided to load on my vertical monitor(designated 1) instead of my "main"(designated 2).

With some software, such as Battletech, there is an option to select the monitor in the "Video" options.

DS does not, as far as i can tell, have this option, so you're stuck with windows deciding(registry entry), based on the last screen it was closed on.
