The ole spiky terrain trick
Wow, I didn't know that one. Brilliant! Works excellently!
Very nice effect !!!
I love that spikey terrain trick. Your execution is brilliant. I first came across the spikey terrain trick in the Carrara Studio 3 Handbook (Mike De La Flor) in the chapter inspired by Lake Louise (Chapter 12 by Peter MacDougall). It is indeed an oldie but a goodie.
Bryce scenes use the spikey terrain trick a lot too.
I have seen it discussed in many of their tutorials.
Octane render 4 Carrara I use displacement vegetation on any mesh because unlike other render engines including Carrara's native, displacement in Octane is relatively cheap resource wise.
I assume (not tried) the same would apply to Octane 4 D|S
Dartanbeck might want to look into it.
Thanks for the comments everyone!
@WendyLuvsCatzPerson speaking of displacement I have started to experimnent making terrains using the vertex modeler displacement brush. You really have to crank up the subdivision but it is kinda nice to draw what you want. It also has the benefit of making curved horizontal surfaces. Unfortunately the terrain shaders don't seem to show up nice on regular vertex objects, not sure if it is a scale thing.
thanks for the zip! he looks like me in the mornings
haha!
I have placed a low detail Acacacia tree in my No One Asked Me thread. Free for any use.

Oh nice, thanks!
I posted this in Diomede's thread for his leaves but will share here too as can be used for shrubbery billboards in general
(and animals etc)
they are all alpha png images
