Iray settings

I'm considering getting an older product that was made before Iray. What needs to be done to make it render well with Iray?

When that happens I retexture the item. If a texture maps several objects, either you remap the object in Studio, or you rework the texture in an image editing tool like Photoshop or Gimp and you apply the DAZ uber shader with the new texture. What Item is it, you wanna buy?

  • It's this: https://www.daz3d.com/fantasy-book Isn't it just surface settings?

Generally the texture maps are not a problem, it is the material settings for the surface and the shader they are using.  Learn by looking at the surface settings in your products that for Iray.

  • It will render, unless it uses custom shaders. If you want to make changes to the settings then you would select the book, in the Editor tab of the Surfaces pane select all its surfaces, and then in the presets tab (or another content pane) apply the Iray Uber Base shader - that is what DS does at render time anyway, so it's worth doing only if you plan to make changes. You could also experiment with applying some of the leather materials in the store, at least for the cover.

Daz Studio will automatically try to convert materials to iray. Sometimes it does a decent job, sometimes it's pretty bad. Especially when dealing with transparencies, gloss&reflections and light emissions, the results can get awkward. For matte surfaces like paper and unpolished wood, it's usually not too bad, but it may help if you have some iray shaders and material sets (these can be nice for bump/displacement maps) at hand for similar surfaces, to help you tweak things to your liking.

Here it is rendered with the supplied materials applied and rendered in DS Iray as is, no change and default lighting. You can play with the default settings after converting to Iray, all you have to do is apply the default Uber shader supplied in the DS Resource download and tweak away, typically I have found the bump/gloss settings are the most obvious ones to play with on older sets, you can of course put the bump map in the displacement settings, add some sub0division and play with that as well.

Or there is this set of conversion shaders in the store:- https://www.daz3d.com/rssy-3delight-to-iray-converter

Note, there used to be an add on texture/pose set 'The Alchemist's Archive' but that seems to have gone from the store, pity as they do add more versatility to the book.

EDIT: Added the Alchemist's Archive textures, again straight out of DS with default render settings/lights. Note these are the Poser Pro (PP) textures applied as the pack did not get DS mat files so playing with even the basic settings in DS would probaly improve things but I a bit busy at the moment to try.

  • @kinich, thanks for the renders, they look great! As far as the pages being able to be turned: are there options like being at the beginning, middle or end of the book?

Okay the book has a few controls and morphs, the front & back covers can be opened, the left & Right Pages can be opened and the two centre pages can be bent in three sections both ways so the pages curve, the centre pages also have some morphs to bend the corners, two bends per corner either way and each of the centre pages also has a page length morph so they can be adjust to match the other pages as they bend, see the render attached for a quick sample of all of these,

I have that converter myself, I like it, but my only problem with it is anything converted with it loses all sense of depth, and is very flat after.

Why would you need to retexture it? o.O. All you need to do is to change the shaders. Most of the time, just applying the Iray Uber Shader is enough. Sometimes you have to tweak the results a little for glossiness, etc.
