Should poser files be installed when I don't have poser application?

Should I install al lthe poser files?
I have installed al the files I suspect are DS files, but there are about a 100 more poserCF or poser files I did not install in the My LIbrary.
Since I don't own the Poser applicaiton I was thinking no sense to add the files.
If the poser files are important or can be used with Carrara 8.5 or Daz 3D Studio I will just install them.
If I do install them should I prepare a Poser folder or something?
The DIM does alot of things automatic based on my settings, so I am reluctant to just download the files and install them.

A lot of them are needed especially for Carrara if legacy stuff, anything DSON is not needed.
pp2 cr2 pz2 files etc are needed for carrara which natively reads them though duf will work in C8.5 mostly but not always.
If you don't use Poser, then you don't need the Poser CF (Companion Files).
All figures prior to Genesis were in Poser Format (Generation 4 and before). If you just select DAZ Studio in the Filters in the DIM, then it should not offer you Poser CF files, but it will give you the Poser versions where there is no DS equivalent. My DAZ 3D Library has a Runtime folder in it which is used for these files, and DS reads it in the Poser Formats are of the Content Library.
Hi guys. I was wondering about this exact same thing myself.
So are you saying that when theres both Poser (.cr2) and Daz (.duf) files available for the same product, theres absolutely no reason to ever use the Poser files over the Daz ones (assuming no other programs used other than Daz Studio)? Theres no advantage of one over the other?
That is correct, assuming that the DUF file is the same, i.e. a file containing the necessary geometry, and not just a DAZ Studio texture file.
If you use DIM (as stated above) you can filter out Poser only content (or DS only content for that matter) if you don't use one or other of these programs.
In the olden days, Poser files used textures which were optimised for use in Poser, but sometimes required a great deal of tweaking to get them to look right in DS. In the last several years, most products, even the ones still in Poser format, come with DAZ Studio textures, which are still added to the Poser Runtime section of 'My DAZ 3D Library', and they are identifiable inside DS by a little scroll icon added at the top of the MAT pose icon.
Cool, thanks for the excellent explanation Jimmy.
You wouldn't believe how confused it made me to begin with having both Daz and Poser files installed in my directories, and in separate locations. I kept buying products and then pulling my hair out thinking that they had vanished lol. I recently bought the Swamp Dwellers Bundle (http://www.daz3d.com/swamp-dwellers-bundle) and was all like "What the hell?! They haven't appeared in my directories or in Smart Content!".
Then I finally realised that they were under the Poser Formats and didn't have metadata.
On the up side, I'm now discovering loads of products I'd bought a while ago and then forgot I had them because they had the same problems :)
A good place to look is in 'Products' which is an alphabetical listing of installed products, even those which do not have Metadata. If you can remember the name of the item, it is a very quick way to find it, whether DS or Poser Format.
Categories can be useful as well, and items which do not appear in Smart Content can be found there as well.
Creating your own Categories is even handier.
Oh, thats an excellent tip about the 'Products' search, thanks for that. I didn't even realise there was anything in there!
Yeah, I've been using categories now. Just spent the last few days sorting all of my files into more meaningful categories to make them easier to browse. I'm still using Daz Studio 4.6 - do you happen to know if you retain the categories you've setup when you upgrade to 4.7?
Yes, they are retained, although I always Export User Data periodically, just in case.

Thanks Mike. How do you do that, btw?
Content Library > options menu (rectangle with horizontal lines in the upper corner) > Content DB Maintenance > Export User Data.
That creates files named UserData_1.dsx (and _2, etc. if needed) in the Runtime:Support folder of your first DAZ Studio Format content folder. If you need to restore your categories, just Re-Import Metadata -- the User Data will be the first item on the list.
I export user data after doing a lot of categorizing, and back up the UserData files in case I need to go back to an earlier version.
Excellent. Thats very helpful - thank you :)
