New Rear-Projected Shadow Techniques?

Hello. I'm looking to do a render where it's a shadow of a person silhouetted and projected onto a screen. I found an old, old, old tutorial that uses 3Delight. Nothing shows up in the store or online revising this for Iray. Wondering if anyone has a good resource?

Here's the old tutorial: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/artzone/pub/tutorials/dazstudio/studio-lighting04

  • put character in scene... change all surfaces >base, reflection, glossy etc to Black (for some reason the eyes still had some white that I had to clean up in PS)
render ... took a couple seconds to do the 1kx1k
    save as tif.
    Open in PS
    create new layer
    turn in white
adjust opacity of the new layer which should be above your base
    and then save as jpg
then render your scene, with nothing where your screen will be save that as a tif
open in PS copy shadow image put that layer behind your screen (which should be empty)
    save as jpg

you can render a "work screen in DS" with a cream fabric say to mimic the material of a pull down shade and then open that in PS shop as use as the layer above the shadow figure adjusting the opacity.
you might need to play with the vibrance setting to keep color in the overlay layer when it's opagued
or maybe just put the shadow image over the background layer instead and fade it some
