Selection Locking

When I'm working with a particular tool, say the translation tool, is there a way to lock the selected item so that when I move the camera around to get a better look at what I'm doing I don't accidentally select a different object when I try to work with my selected object again?

Not that I am aware of, short of making everything else unselectable.
