Need Upgrade! Please Help

Hi, I think it's time for me to upgrade from my GTX 1060. I can't afford anything beyond RTX 3070. Even for the RTX 3070, I have to take a loan from the bank lol. I have an i5 build, 16 GB RAM. I don't remember the PSU, but it was definitely the one recommended for GTX 1060. Hence my question: Can I keep my build and just upgrade my GPU? If no, then okay, I will stop. No further questions. If yes, then please suggest me a good GPU. And please say if CUDA cores matter. Thanks

Yes by all means you can keep that computer and just update the GPU. You may just have to work with smaller scenes and piece them together in say Photoshop of Gimp. You'll have enough to do a decent sized scene but if you go overboard on how much you put into it then you may be running out of RAM. Nowadays 16gb is considered to be a bare minimum for this kind of stuff.

If you are doing or intend on doing Iray renders, the cheaper RTX 3060 (not Ti) with 12GB's of VRAM (memory) would be a better and cheaper choice, it will still outrun the "King of the Hill" RTX 2080 Ti of the previous generation.

I'm using RTX 2070 Super that has 8GB's of VRAM, it's slower than RTX 2080 Ti, but I wouldn't upgrade for any speed increase as I can render pretty big scenes in just 15 minutes, but the amount of VRAM is getting too small. The RTX 3070 (all the versions) are also just 8GB's.

Bestbuy will have RTX cards in stock again at select stores on August 26, 2021. It's the next way to get a card at retail price. Of course, you will need to get there at least a few hours before 7:30 am to get a good spot in line.

Not every Best Buy will have them either. My town is not on the list. Closest one is about 70 miles away.

Okay great! So I am keeping my build and just changing my GPU to 3060 12GB one. But my priority is speed: quicker renders. I don't mind rendering multiple pieces and adding them one above the other to finally arrive at the desired image. Mostly my scenes will have 3-4 characters max in an environment(which may just be a HDRI). So I am in doubt if more CUDA cores will help.

    Ohh My!

These graphics cards are no where available. Not even the older ones. The ones that are available are being sold at hefty prices. Upto 4 times the MSRP/MRP. OMG! I may have to wait.

In Finland they are available and I hear it's the same in Germany, you should move herecheeky

  • -whispers- Newegg is your friend.  No really, they are.  My sons fan has decided to nerf itself on his heatsink and given that his motherboard is claiming two other fans aren't working (they are, spinny spinny spinny, but mb says nope) I realized his mb is likely a problem as well.  I figured we'd be dead trying to find a reasonably priced replacement for his pc (mb and heatsink/fan would cost nearly as much as we paid for his comp, so not worth it) but we were pleasantly surprised to find their back to school sale going on.  I've looked over a lot of their GPU prices and yes, the 2k series NVIDIA card prices are astronomical, but the newer 3k series really isn't that bad.
